Installing New Window Motor (Caution)

A Word Of Caution!

Remember, on the last rivet there will be a lot of tension. Keep you fingers clear (even if the window is propped)!

While I finished drilling out the last rivet the whole assembly dropped. Not just a little, there was some serious force. I had my finger unknowingly in danger.

What Happened To Me:
When it dropped I was stuck in serious pain. I had to honk my horn for help because I could not move. When my family acknowledged that something was wrong outside they had to call the Fire Department. The FD proceeded to cut out part of my inner door. It took us 45 minutes to get me unstuck while in severe pain. I just got back from the hospital. I almost lost my finger at the knuckle. If it can happen to me, you can bet your anus it can happen to someone else.

So I hope that this gets read when people realize what a pita it is and search for answers for their Power Window Motor / Regulator Replacement ( Swap / Change)

Re: Installing New Window Motor (Caution)

Wow jeff, I hope your finger recovers... any long term damage?

before I even bought my latest 3rd gen, I found a guy selling a complete door for a one for $35. I went ahead and bought it because I thought it was a good price for a door with all power accesories. I got a good look at the power window assembly that way, and decided right then my next car was going to have manual windows. Haven't regretted it once.

If your holding the drill with both hands, to keep the drill focused, and the door isn't going anywhere, since it's bolted to the car, why would your finger be in danger? I've done it many times, it's kinda scary hearing the clank, but oh well, and as for the fourth gen reference, they do the same thing.

Thanks for sharing! Glad you didn't loose a digit!

I have done plenty window motors in 3rd and 4th gens. I have never had a window fall, but I also do not take the regulator out, I take the motor out of the regulator with it still in the door. That could be why. I will definitely make sure my body parts are out of the way from now on though!

I appreciate the warning, and I hope you'll mend up soon so you can enjoy driving with your windows down, I have to ask though, how long did it take for you to type this post up? Seriously though, hope you're doing ok.

Re: Installing New Window Motor (Caution)

Thanks. Finger is getting better. The spring loaded regulator (Gear with holes in it) is what clamped down on my finger My finger was in the mentioned hole above and the regulator went down right behind it. It was one of those things.. Wrong alignment and finger in wrong area. At any rate, might not get feeling back in my finger as I have some serious nerve damage. Oh well, just don't someone else to have to go through this or lose a finger altogether. Guess the local mechanic is going to get my money from now on. Sucks to lose my weekend projects!

feeling like a beer commercial saying this or something, but man... don't give up your weekend projects! I was afraid of pinching my fingers when I had replace the tracks that my trucks window regulator wheels slide in.. Scary. At least you learned for next time if you ever have to do it again on your own vehicles.
