1987 GTA 5 speed build numbers
Re: 1987 GTA 5 speed build numbers
It should be a sticky... But basically, no one kept track of combinations of options. You could probably find out how many 5spd Firebirds were built, but not how many had the GTA option AND the 5spd.

http://www.gtasourcepage.com/87RPOFigures.html is about the best you'll get.
From 88 and up, the numbers were separated specifically for GTAs, but in 87 that wasn't the case.

I got my package from GM Canada's Vintage Vehicle Services. For 1988 as well, in Canada, they do not distinguish Trans Ams and GTAs.
So I know I am at best 1 of 378 and probably a whole lot less than that.

GTASourcepage.com has some good figures on 1988-1992. As Jim pointed out, 1987 shows combined Trans AM and GTA so the information is less specific.
Frankie's website shows 809 (MK6 -- Transmission, 5-Speed Manual) GTAs in 1988. However, Frankie's figures only account for US and no exports. So this does not factor in cars sent to Canada.
Since you have a Canadian VIN, have you tried entering in your VIN into Compnine's database?

Compnine has Canadian figures for a good amount of the Canadian VINs, even prior to 1990.

Re: 1987 GTA 5 speed build numbers
Interesting thing about CompNine is that when I post my Canadian Cars, I get "vehicle unknown", "build date unknown". I then get a print out of the full list of rpo codes, which are correct (which I can get from GM Canada)
.
But, unfortunately from CompNine, there is no idea of numbers, etc. Also, where does CompNine get their information? And, why should it be any more accurate than GM?

Re: 1987 GTA 5 speed build numbers
I do want to make it clear I did not suggest that Compnine's information would be any more accurate than GM. GM is the source of the information as the car manufacturer, and as such, there should no more accurate info than the source (GM). As to where Compnine gets the information, it has a source to GM to have obtained the amount of information they have. Although the database is far from complete (specifically for the ThirdGens), and there appears to be some errors, it has shown to have information that has been verified.
I just ran a 1985 TA Canadian VIN and it turned up production numbers for it. I then ran a 1988 GTA Canadian VIN and it turned up without production numbers. I think it may be correctable. They are showing 3,175 1988 Firebird, Canadian, VINs. Of those 132 are LB9/5-speed combos. It just isn't breaking it down as to how many are Trans Am/GTAs.
The data from Compnine isn't 100% complete and isn't 100% accurate. At this time, that information doesn't exist to the public. So take this with some caution.

Re: 1987 GTA 5 speed build numbers
Hi Guys, I'm pretty new to the Third Gen forum, I've been a GTO owner for a LONG time. I've owned a 69 GTO and a 06 GTO. I had a 88 Firebird with T-tops way back in 1996 when I was in the navy. I just recently sold my 06 GTO and purchased a 1987 GTA.
You guys arent going to believe it without seeing it, but I stumbled across my car looking for a car with a 305/M5, and when I went to look at my car, it had these funny looking mirrors on it. Turns out my car is one of the origional 87 GTAs built with RPO codes LB9/MM5 AND DD9 "euro style mirrors". I know I am one of 50 with those mirrors, wonder how many of those 50 had the LB9/MM5 too.
