Re: 1989 Formula Question

At some point you could get WS6 with either drum or disc brakes. I'm not sure what year that started but I've seen it as early as 1987. The choice of engine has little to do with the suspension and brake options.

Re: 1989 Formula Question

I will look into it here probably next week...
1) From 1982 - 1984 WS7 was the same as WS6 but with drum brakes. There was a short time where G80 (posi trac) was NA in either 1983 or 1984 and they had a WY6 & WY7 or something along those lines that was more or less the same but with without G80.
2) In 1985 & 1986 I do not remember ever seeing a WS7 car, nor do I recall seeing a WS6 car with drum brakes... Nor do I remember seeing a S/E with WS6 in 85 & 86, as I suspect it was no longer available as WS6 mandated 16" rims those years.
3) 1987 with the reincarnation of the Formula name rear drums appeared as all Formulas had WS6.
4) ALL LB9/M5 Formula's and GTA's & L98 Trans Am's and Camaros mandated rear disc brakes in the US... However there was a disc brake shortage in 1991 and they were only used on 1LE cars for a time. Those cars ended up with aluminum drum rear brakes...
5) IIRC non performance gear T/A's and Camaros with the LB9/M5 may or may not have had the rear drums.. Discs were an option which were dependent on a particular option IE G92, or simply specifying the J65 discs...

I will have to verify this, however I want to think that Rear drum brakes were mandated on LB9/A4 Formulas with T-tops in 1987...

In a nutshell that about sums it up, however there are other nuances with disc brakes as early years they were available without WS6, so they were not synonymous.

Hope that helps...

John
