1991 Z28 question

I found a 1991 Z28 camaro 5 speed car. It has the 140 mph speedo. Should it have a a 3.42 posi disc rear end? Will it have the G92 option? Could it have drum brakes? Where is the RPO sticker?

Thanks,
Brandon

Re: 1991 Z28 question

RPO sticker should be in either the center console or in the driver side rear locking hatch. Sometime in 91 they moved it.

It could have drum brakes and it could (probably) has a posi. G92 I am not sure of, the 350 required it, and for some reason I am thinking so did the 305 5-speed, but a quick search only showed that the 350 required it and the tech data backs that G92 wasn't required on it. If it has G92 then it would have a 3.42, without G92 it's a 3.08

Re: 1991 Z28 question

What does the 140 speedo tell me. Didn't some cars come with 115 speedos?

I think it tells you that it isn't a 305 AT or a non-B4C RS

Right, so the 140 speedo tells you it would be a 5 speed.

Re: 1991 Z28 question

So it could have disc or drums? What does the exhaust tell me? Being a z28 car, it it the 205 or 230 horse motor?

Re: 1991 Z28 question

It could have discs or drums, drums don't rule out G92 for 1991 either.

G92 cars, I believe, will have the dual cat setup.

The HP rating depends on G92 or not.

Re: 1991 Z28 question

So I need to find the RPO sticker and look for G92. If it is g92, it will have the 230 HP motor?

The motors are the same between G92 and non-G92.

Do you have the VIN? If so, enter it into Compnine.com and it should give you the list of RPO codes for that VIN.

Re: 1991 Z28 question

No, but I can get the VIN. Compnine.com did not work for my 1991 trans am convertible. Is this a good car to get?(z28) Is the production low? This is a hardtop, 5 speed car.

That is interesting and is the first I've heard of any 1990+ newer ThirdGen not appearing in their database. Compnine has 1990+ ThirdGens in their database nearly all covered. 1990 model year is complete and 1991 and 1992 are very well near complete with only a small percentage unaccounted for. Anything older than 1990 appears to be only Canadian.

That said, it appears part of their unaccounted for 1991 is roughly 127 Convertibles. They have 548 1992 Trans Am Convertibles in their database while we show 555 being built.

Did you happen to check a few days ago? There was an issue with their database, and all queries were coming up empty. Was that possibly when you checked their database for your 1991 T/A Convertible? The issue was fixed. I'd try your VIN again.

The price went from 2k to 800 bucks? Personally I think it's a good deal.

I am sorry. Let me clarify. He was asking 2k whick is 2000. We negotiated on 800 because of the replacement engine and unknown rear end

Re: 1991 Z28 question

Ok, so how is that any different then what I said? The price went from 2k to 800 bucks... anyway, I think it's a good deal. I don't like hard tops, but a 305 5-speed w/ G92 is a pretty desirable car, imho.

Re: 1991 Z28 question

Shouldn't this motor be the 230 HP motor because it is a true Z28 and has the G92 code. It also has the dual cat code.

Not necessarily. Unless it was drastically different for Firebirds. My 1987 Trans Am had the 305TPI engine and the 140MPH speedometer as well as an automatic transmission. As far as I know the 140MPH speedo was standard on all L98 cars and optional on LB9 (and possibly other) cars.

This is my first Camaro. I usually buy GTA's. It amazes me how they did Camaros concerning options. Usually in GTA's, the Y84 code meant rear disc brakes.

Y84 is the GTA option code I believe. That usually meant disc brakes, except in 1991 when there was a shortage of the disc rear ends. As a result dealers or customers who ordered GTAs were given a credit, or they had to wait longer for the cars to be delivered.

The actual RPO code for rear disc brakes is J65.

That's the 305TPI engine. I'm not sure what determines whether or not the engine is a 205HP or 230HP engine. As far as I know the 230HP variants were all N10 cars with a 5 speed manual transmission. 5 speed cars got the L98 cam while the rest got the standard LB9 cam.

The site data confirms that assertion: https://www.thirdgen.org/1991-pontiac-firebird

I'm not sure but N10 may have been available on A4 equipped LB9 cars, but they got the smaller cam while the 5 speed cars got the L98's more aggressive cam. The cam may have made more of a difference than N10 (dual cat) exhaust setups did in terms of ratings.

Re: 1991 Z28 question

That is correct, but most of the GTA's(Y84) had rear disc brakes. I have seen some without but very few.

You just need an image host such as Imageshack or Photobucket. Just get an account there, upload your photos and it generates the links to your images for posting in forums. Of the two I prefer Photobucket.

That makes sense then. Most of the cars I've seen that were made after 1987 didn't get the 140MPH speedo. Though my 1992 Formula was originally equipped with a 305TPI engine, 5 speed transmission and the 140MPH speedo. But again the A4 cars I've seen after 1987 generally didn't as I recall.
