85 in the Firebird and..
I need to know if specifically '88 firebirds had cable driven speedo's??

The Firebird got the electronic cluster as early as 86, but they didn't completely phase out the cable speedometer until a few years later. Generally speaking, base models are the only ones you need to worry about finding with a cable. Most Firebirds with a 120mph or better speedometer have the electronic VSS.
