need help figuring how to title this camaro
hey everyone, i baught a 90' rs camaro with no title for $300. i baught it from a mechanic who said this guy came to his shop and it needed lots of repairs (iv already fixed everything now) and the guy figured the car wasnt worth the repair bill so he told the mechanic to keep it and so whatever with it. so the mechanic put it on craigslist and i baught it. (i was gonna use it for a parts car)
but the car was too nice to part out. so now i want a title for it. and the original owner left the regestration in the car, so i was able to get his address and number and call him, to see if he can give me the title.
well he told me it had a $15,000 lein on it from the state of indiana....and that all he was ever able to do with the car when he owned it, was just regester and renew plates. he said he couldnt sell it or anything because of the lein the state had on it.
soooo....what do i do???? and suggestions on how i can get around this? (i may do a vin swap, but thats LAST resort)

im pretty sure this will be moved as its not a classified ad, but
you gotta get that lien released or your not gonna be able to register it, technically that mechanic wasnt suppose to accept it, or sell it if its got a lien on it, thats a crap storm waiting to happen with the lender,
anyway, you would have to contact the lien holder and try to strike a deal to end the 15,000 lien(thats a ton of money for a 90 RS)

You need to go through a towing company. Once they tow a vehicle in for storage and no one pays the bill, here in cali they do a lein sale. It sends out the proper documents, including anything to do with the state of Indiana. Then the vehicle is theirs free and clear after a quick turn around. Go to a SMALL tow company, not a big one.
The second thing you could try to do is just go down to the DMV and file for a lost title, especially since the lien is from another state it just might work.
You can always register it in your name with a 'lost title' so that your legal. If your happy driving it and don't have a need to sell it right away, that'll most likely work.
Have you called the DMV to see if they say there's any problem registering it? Nitro-Nicky

You could put a mechanics lein on it also. Get the receipts or make some for all the work that has been done to it. Then you will file your own lein against the car. You will have to contact the other lein holders and let them know you also have a lein on the car. They most likely will settle with you sorta like a credit card company. LOL. It worked for me.

TGO does not promote or support illegal actions, nor does it allow the discussion to continue. VIN swapping is a federal offense and will not be discussed on this forum. All responses to this post need to be legal options to getting the car titled. Anything else and this post will be deleted.

Generally when there is a lien against the car, you won't get the title or be able to title the car without the financing company releasing it (which I don't see happening if it has a 15k lien against it) and could possibly come and get the car from you for him not making the payments on it. Best thing to do is take it back to the mechanic, get your 300 bucks back and let him deal with the headache.
My GTA didn't have a title when I bought it, I went to my circuit court clerk and they looked up the vin, showed it had a lien against it. I then had to have a police officer write a statement saying that I have possession of the vehicle with vin xxx on it. I then had to mail certified letters to both the previous owner of the car, and the finance company that had the lien against it. I then had to mail the letter that was returned to me from the previous owner to the finance company, only then did the finance company release the lien on the car (it was only $1500), took the letter the finance company sent me to the court clerk and I got a title for the car.

i live in indiana, and the lein is apperantly from the state of indiana is what the original owner told me. but i called a lein place and they said they couldnt do anything for me. then i called another one and they said they could. but idk if they completely understand the story i told them over the phone, but its worth a try. oh and im a mechanic, so its a mechanics lien im trying to do btw. the other company said no, and this one said yes. so im hopin for the best. and itll be $300
