1985 Trans Am first resto

hey guys just got my t/a to the house, after 5 years after i sold it i got it back, it is completely stripped of interior and has no motor or tranny, if you look in my garage you'll see what it used to look like, was originally an LB9 WS6 with a 700R4 behind it but all of that is gone now, i now have a blown tranny that was in it, and a motor that the cam warped in (long story but i didn't do it) I also have the tpi setup still which is unharmed which i am relieved to see lol, will have some pics up of how it looks now in the morning, feel free to post and help me out with some tips as this is my first resto on an f-body

Re: 1985 Trans Am first resto

I would suggest buying a digital camera, if you dont already have one. Its a must to take pictures as you dissasemble. That would be my advice. Good luck and dont give up, you will get discouraged.

Re: 1985 Trans Am first resto

as im out and about in the area im looking around and if i come across anything ill let you know. theres an 84 t/a for sale in the area posted on craigslist. could be used for all the parts you need. the dash pad is gone. cheaper to replace it i think.
i would put the interior back together first, and start the engine and trans next. body and wheels can go last.

cleaned out the inside this morning, no surprises no rust to speak of at all, weatherstripping leaves something to be desired but that's all part of buying a car that's been sitting for 5 years

Re: 1985 Trans Am first resto

What's the story behind it? Why did it get gutted? Was someone turning it into a race car? I kinda dig the color combo...don't see too many gold TAs with charcoal accents!

Good luck with it...I have the same car as an '86 hardtop. Gotta love third gen TAs Nice to see another non-GTA get a second lease on life!

i had it when i was a freshman in high school, i went outta town for a month and left a buddy of mine in charge of going by and runnin it now and then to keep it fresh. it had a slow oil leak and i told him to keep it topped off. well i finally come back home and my car is gone, so i call him and tell him to bring it back, he pulls in and it sould like a sack of marbles were poured into the intake and it is pouring smoke. apparently her didn't top off the oil and decided he was gonna stretch her legs to see what she'd do, he got up to about 130 and ran it outta oil. eneded up warping the cam, i sold it like an idiot because at the time i was 15 with no job and not much in the mechanic dep. since then i have aquired my auto diploma and currently work at an autozone, i tracked the guy down i sold it to 3 years ago and he told me he sold it for scrap and it got crushed, i almost cried, well here it is five years after i sold it and one of my managers had it, turns out the guy that bought it that runs the scrap yard gave it to him, we talked about it and he sold it to me for 100 bucks, i'm also getting all the parts he has for it (orig. motor which is shot but the tpi assembly is unharmed, the tranny that was in it, also shot, a set of the 16 inch snowflakes, and anything else that was taken off that's just laying around) long story but i'm just really happy to have it back in my possession

lesson learned, never let anyone no matter how much you trust them, drive your third gen, and if you ever leave, take her with you lol

i'm tryin to find another 85 LB9 tpi motor but that's damn near impossible for my price range, i have 200-300 to spend on a motor, i already have another 700R4 a friend is gonna give me cuz he don't need it

Not really impossible, actually most people here don't like or care for 305's and they're willing to sell them for cheap. I'm probably going to have to get one since mine threw a rod and made a huge hole on the oil pan. I know I'll have to at least get a new crankshaft and I'm still debating whether I should keep my rare combo original or just go the 350 route. But don't loose your hopes, I think 200-300 is very reasonable for an LB9.

Re: 1985 Trans Am first resto

It's too bad that you're in GA, because I still have the original 305 lb9 out of my 85 and would be willing to sell it cheap but obviously that's a long way to go for a motor that needs to be rebuilt anyway...

Re: 1985 Trans Am first resto

The number is the paint code (color) the U is upper, the L is lower. 60 is listed as light chestnut metallic, ie gold.

Re: 1985 Trans Am first resto

so what you're saying is that having the same color means that there wasn't originally the charcoal trim?

Re: 1985 Trans Am first resto

The 60U and 60L is representative of the body color, not the ground effects. The entire body is the same color. Now, the 82 Pace Car was 16U and 16L, but had a blue lower. That's because the entire car was painted one color then the blue was sprayed over top of the silver as a special pattern for the pace car only. Any other 16L/16U car would be completely silver.

AR9 is the seats
CC1 is TTops
F is for the model year I think. (80=A, 81=B, 82=C, 83=D, 84=E, 85=F)
01D - build date of January, 4th week.
2FS87 - Pontiac, FBody, Firebird coupe
L - Van Nuys Factory
617596 - Body build number
The bottom numbers are plant processing numbers and mean nothing to us.

Re: 1985 Trans Am first resto

60U/L, per the 1985 Pontiac order sheet, is "Lt Chestnut Metallic" as Drew pointed out. It does stand for Upper and Lower body color. But as Scott pointed out, it does not apply here as it's your aero molding that is black.

As a Trans Am, it has the Aero (ground effects) package as standard. Depending on the exterior color, the aero package could come in different colors. For example, primary white exterior could have came with white aero package or Lt Chestnut aero package. Primary black exterior could have came with black aero package or Lt Chestnut aero package.

My 1985 order sheet does not show any other aero molding color besides Lt Chestnut when the primary exterior color is Lt Chestnut. It appears to me you have the fade dot/square stripe, which sort of makes me think it's legit and not just a custom job. Perhaps Drew, Scott and John Z could explain the black aero molding as my info does not appear to support it being factory. However, the order sheet is not an all inclusive manual.
