Rear hatch light with carpeted interior?
I have a stock 85 Z28 with a factory push-button switch located next to the rear hatch latch and a two-wire connector (orange and white, not connected to anything) behind the plastic trim panel at the very back of the car. The wire colors and switch seem like they would be for the light installed at the back of the interior to light the hatch area. I don't have the light, and my interior trim piece doesn't have a cut-out for one. Is this because my rear interior plastic has the carpet option? I would like to add this light if I could find one that fits into a carpeted interior.

My car has the carpeted panels and also has the light. Not sure of the wire color codes, but the light can be had with carpet.

Okay, I'm jealous.
Another great idea that GM forgot about with the 4th gen. I *HATE* the fit/finish of the cheap plastic rear panels on my 02.

My old red '82 T/A and current '82 Recaro T/A have the carpeted rear cargo panels and trunk light.

The carpeted interior panels were an option (RPO B48) from 82 up through 1989. It required the custom level interior, and the locking cargo cover. It was standard on the Berlinetta and LT, and was an at cost option on the other cars.
It's just carpet cut to fit the low spots of the interior panels. A hot glue gun and a few hours with a razor blade and some color matched cut pile would accomplish the same thing. Most of the ones I've seen look pretty bad after the carpet faded and got dirty.
The cargo light varied by year. Some cars have a manual on/off switch, others just come on when the hatch is open, and others don't have the light at all.
The dome light circuit goes all over the car. The white wire is the ground, orange is a full time 12v+ constant. When the white wire is grounded anywhere in the circuit, all the lights in the circuit come on.

Re: Rear hatch light with carpeted interior?
What is the RPO code option for the rear hatch carpeted panels? I want to see if my 87 was supposed to be equipped with this. Thanks.

Re: Rear hatch light with carpeted interior?
Yeah, I never even knew some years had a switch until I bought my TA and IROC last year. As the owner previously of 2 '89s, and a '91 now, it appears to me that '89-'92 did not get the switch in the trunk...none of mine have ever had it. However, both my '86 and '88 have it, and neither one has the "custom" trunk...

Re: Rear hatch light with carpeted interior?
It didn't require the locking cover in all years, at least not in '86. My two '86 IROCs with the carpet trim do not have the locking cargo cover. IIRC, the '86 Camaro brochure states somewhere in it that the cover was not available on IROC-Z. Not sure why that would be though, unless it has something to do with stowing a flat tire.
Re: Rear hatch light with carpeted interior?
What I posted is what is shown in the White Book, and matches pretty closely with what I've personally seen. That doesn't mean it's entirely accurate, but honestly I'm not interested enough in the topic to research it any further.

Re: Rear hatch light with carpeted interior?
My '82 Z has the custom cloth interior. Still no carpet on the rear except the floor. Does have the hatch light at rear with a on/off slider switch. Also thought I have read this to be part of the lighting option which included the under dash dome lights not a interior trim option. Is it possible that your rear cover area had been replace with a piece without the light?

Re: Rear hatch light with carpeted interior?
As a note, my 1987 has a slider switch for sure, and my 1989 has the automatic light IIRC
I honestly never heard of a car without the rear light... Its a first for me...
The switch vs the automatic light is a love hate thing... I hate the fact that I often leave the light on, look in my rear view mirror to see it on. However I like the fact that I can open my hatch without worry of draining my battery at a show...

Got all three in my 82 Z. I haven't figured out yet why the build sheet lists all 4 RPO codes.
bedbed - Have you looked for your build sheet under either front seat? Just feel around under the reap part of each seat. If you find a piece of paper, you will have to remove the seat to get the sheet from under the seat springs.
