Windshield washer pump setup question

Not sure this is where this post belongs (moderator, feel free to move). I have replaced absolutely everything in my washer pump setup; pump, lines, wiper motor, etc. But, I do not know where the check valve(s) go in the setup. Not sure if they are pre-pump or post-pump. I cannot get enough pressure to pump the water out. The only thing left is the check valve(s). I think there was only one when I took it all out. Does anyone have a pic or diagram that shows the line setup?

BTW, '84 Z28 delay wiper/cruise control setup.

I need to get mine working on my '83 too, but I've been seriously thinking of converting to the newer style with the pump inside the washer tank. The biggest advantage to those is, since the pump is taking a suction inside the tank below the liquid level, it doesn't lose it's prime.

I'm not positive as to where the check valve goes on the old one, but I'd bet it goes on the suction side of the pump. I'm assuming it's most likely one that plugs into the hose, so I would put it near the tank. After the hose fills with fluid, it should prevent the fluid from draining back to the tank.

If you hear the pump trying to work, but it won't spray - I'd try to "prime" the pump by holding the suction hose up above pump level and manually filling the hose. Then have someone cycle the wash to see if it'll try to spray then....

OK, I have a couple of extra feet of the hose. I'll try the check valve on the suction side.

Re: Windshield washer pump setup question

After some experimentation this weekend validated washer pump is just losing prime. Was wondering if anyone can confirm if there is supposed to be an inline check valve between reservoir and pump, or if I am missing something on the in-tank pickup line. My tank pickup is rubber hose and a funnel shaped plastic end (no CV).

Re: Windshield washer pump setup question

No check valve.

Disconnect the hoses from that worthless POS on the pump; go to the store and get a generic outside-the-tank one; hook up the hoses and the pump wires to that.

It'll be about 10,000,000 times better than that stoopid factory garbage ever thought about being.
