After 23 years....

After 23 years, I'm going to perform a tune up on my car. I checked with my local dealer for parts becuase I want it to be as close to original as possible. They informed me they no longer carry the fan belt, as I would have to get an aftermarket one instead. They did give a list of parts and costs.

distributor cap 42.74
air filter 11.86
rotor button 8.76
plug wires 74.46
sparkplugs 2.90 each
total 172.29

I hope GM continues to make the remaining parts so that we can keep our cars original. If not, we may want to stock up now. I know my car has never been tuned up in 23 years it still wears the original plug wires.

Try www.rockauto.com for cheaper prices on ACDelco parts.

Ask Scott, but I think the belts may have been Goodyear Gatorbacks...

No harm in changing filters/ignition/rubber. These items are required to keep the car running and don't compromise originality very much.

Hope your tires aren't original if you plan on driving it.

I agree, as long as it looks right.

I just removed a set of Good Year ZR50 Gatorbacks from my 91 B4C... they have 14088 miles on them exactly and are sitting in the garage. Fantastic condition but very dry and low grip.

I agree, I do have new Firestone tires on the car.

My local dealer lowered the prices they previously gave me.

distributor cap $29.92
air filter $8.30
rotor button $6.13
sparkplugs $2.03 each
plug wires $52.12
Total $112.71

I didn't go with the AC/Delco wires because I found new Packard wires that are custom fit for the Camaro and look almost identical to the original wires. They even have the same boots as the originals. Cost was $43.94 plus shipping. My total tune up cost is $116.96.

Re: After 23 years....

I have done a few 1000 point judging shows and had my car 1000 point judged a number of times and all I can say is that you won't lose points for replacement parts unless they are obviously incorrect. Belts and hoses are a requirement, and as long as they look correct in color and design, you should be fine. Yellow or red plug wires will get you points off on an "original" car. If you replace a relay, replace it with one that looks correct. I've seen fuel pump relays at the store come in a gray housing instead of black. The brand isn't as important. Now with that said, I have replaced parts on my car with as close to accurate as possible.

Same thing happened to mine. My IROC had 21,500 on it when I removed my Gatorbacks...still had great tread. However, anything that was more than 1/3 throttle off the line caused nothing but unwanted tire spin.

Before I smoked them off by accident, or had an accident, I took them off to keep them for shows and stuff down the road. I plan on buying a second set of nice reman IROC wheels, and remounting them at some point.

I have a set of rims hanging on my garage wall that those tires would look good mounted on. If you are ever going to get rid of them I want them. They would be in my personal museum lol.

Haha, I have them sitting in my garage right now. Torn on what to do with them, somebody told me they were worth a lot but I doubt it. I think I'll just keep them with the car.

I wish somebody made a replacement 245/50/16 that looked like these, though. I like the clean sidewalls.

I've seen the same thing. Look at the NCRS guidelines if you're really worried about it. I've seen NCRS Top Flight 'vettes with new rubber parts that were still judged highly. Wear and tear parts that will need replacing should be replaced/rebuilt as appropriate, and with GM cars it's easy to replace with parts that look factory correct.

For a photo-shoot, nothing beats the original tires.

Re: After 23 years....

Due to the weather this weekend, I didn't perform the tune-up. However I did inspect the job ahead of me and noticed that changing the plugs on the right side engine bank will prove to be a challenge.

Spark plugs #4, #6, #7, and #8 are very easy to get at from the bottom.
