E7Z and vin code?

Looking at an red camaro and rpo's dont tell me anything about if it's an iroc or what type brakes are on the back.it dose have theGU2 2.73 and my vin search showed up it's a 88 with an l03.There is no 3rd break light and the rear spoiler looks like a mix between a firebird and camaro.I've not sean one like this before. But I've ony been into 3rd gen's for 2 years.Every vehical I try to run the rpo code E7Z says code error.I cant get anything on it.If it helps the code N90 for the 15inch alum.wheels.I'm going to check out the info on the 88 modle year.I didn't see any rs badges.or iroc or z28.

In 1988, if you have the RPO list from the center console and Z28 isn't there, then it's a sport coupe. 1988 had only 2 models, the Z28 (IROC-Z) and the Sport Coupe with a "shorty" spoiler. It was a 1/2 year option for 88 only. Sounds like a Sport Coupe model.

Re: E7Z and vin code?

I concur. The oddball 88 only spoiler is the give away.

In 1988 the Sport Coupe got the same body style as the previous years Z28. Except they had a typical flat hood (no louvers), no fog lights, silver or gold GFX (Z28's were monochrome in 88), 15" aluminum wheels, and either the stubby wing or the normal 3 piece Camaro spoiler. All the badges read "Camaro" instead of Irocz or RS, etc. In 89 the base model Camaro was the RS.

The E?Z codes usually have to do with the speed sensor options. They're really not important unless you're trying to fix speedometer related problems and need to order parts... Even then you might never need to know those codes.

Re: E7Z and vin code?

Right: E7Z in my database is "VSS delete". Probably refers to the fact that the car in question came with a cable speedo instead of a VSS in the trans, but I'm not positive of that.

If you have your RPO codes, you have the one for the brake system. J codes are for brakes. Something like J41 was drums, J6x was discs.

If memory serves, in that year there was no discrete "IROC" model; all Z28s came with the IROC package. Therefore if it has RPO Z28 it has the IROC package. No Z28, no IROC.

As far as the spoiler, these cars are a GM product; therefore any part interchanges to any year of any car. Any lop-eared kid can pick up any screwdriver and create any random combination of any parts imaginable at any time for any reason (or more likely, no reason at all). Just because it has weird stuff bolted to it now, doesn't necessarily have anything to do with how it came from the factory. Pay it no mind beyond deciding whether you like it or not.

Likewise, badges both peel right off and stick right on; and some people even think they're "improving" their car somehow by removing existing ones, or think that they'll fool somebody by adding them to cars they don't belong on.

Like a kid that I knew some years ago that had about a 85 or 86 base-model-ish Trans Am LB9/auto car, and stuck "Turbo TA" stickers all over it. He told me it was for sale, wanted top dollar for it and I politely declined, and then proceeded to tell me all about how bad-a$$ it was and how his car was going to show me what "muscle" really is and beat mine like a red-headed stepchild and a bunch more such running off at the mouth, so we lined em up. I DRILLED him HARD like I would do a Mustang, like about 4 car lengths before I even got out of 1st gear (5-spd, 3.73 gears), about 3 or 4 times in a row when he thought maybe the first time and the second time were a fluke, maybe without even cracking the secondaries, since after all, all he had was a TPI, and those just aren't competitive, EVER (unless little blue bottles are involved). That wiped the whole "Turbo TA" grin off his face REAL QUICK. Don't think he ever took the stupid stickers off though... or managed to sell the car. Pay no attention to stickers and badges when attempting to "identify" a car's actual identity, pay attention to RPO codes.
