Re: First three, then four, now five in a three-car garage.

Then, I couldn't help myself when I found a mint, original owner 92 Formula. So my 4-in-3 car garage became a 5-in-3 this weekend, because I didn't have the heart to let it sit outside after being in a garage all these years.

Here's some shots of the cars when they're not sitting in the space I've nearly outgrown.

Thanks 86TA. It's not too bad getting them out, the middle two are on car dollys and the 85 IROC is basically parallel parked in there.

Killert - I can post some more pictures.

Yes, it is a lot like Tetris! Only it's a lot more work than pushing buttons on a controller.

I'm a building superintendent in charge of high rise building construction from beginning to end. My hobby had been building 1932-1963 street rods of all kinds that I used to show. Now I collect original 3rd gens since I don't have time to build street rods. I've owned dozens of cars, but I really enjoy the styling and handling of the of the 3rd gens cars over many others. For the amount of car that you actually get for your money I'd say they are the best collector car on the market at the current time.

I think you have room for 1 more parallel parked in the back, if you put it on skates & slide it in.

I thought of stacking them, but the ceiling was 3" too short for 2 cars and the lift rack. I'm maxed out. I'm insured by hagerty and they require that your vehicles are in a secure garage and not outside to be insured by them.

I didn't mean stacking them up, but I meant 2 parallel parked across the back, nose to nose (or rear), then the 4 like they are in front.

Of course, I can't see everything so I really don't know what is in that corner.

what about parallel parking two cars on each side of the garage, so when the garage doors open you see the side of the cars instead of the front of them?

Re: First three, then four, now five in a three-car garage.

Wow...needless to say, I'm impressed. And here I sold my RS to make some room because I wanted more space in my oversized, double-deep 4 car garage!!!

Not to worry, though...I sent out inquiries last night on 2 GTAs and a TTA. While the original thought was to sell two third gens for an LS1 SS, that seems to be changing... I also found a 25k mile M5 '88 TA with t-tops, but its 6 hours away...I have no idea when I'll be able to drive 12 hours to see it, and hopefully bring it home with me...

Congrats! You are kind of in a fun period right now. For better or worse, you've sold one of your cars. Now, you have an empty spot to fill and some cash to spend. Under those circumstances, the "search" for something new becomes alot of fun.

yo soy el warg, ( what does that name mean anyway? ), still wondering what the minimum ht required was to stack two third gens.

I'll measure that height when I get home tonight. As I remember the bottom of the garage door openers were going to be in the way for the hardtops, but the convertibles would work if the tops were down when I took the cars up on the lifts to park another one below it. It will also depend on the thickness of the ramps that you go with. Different brands have various specifications that they all list. Another thing to remember is that when you go with ramps that lift you can only pull in and out directly in front on the doors where the ramps are. You can't use car dollys and move your cars sideways like I did. If you plan what car goes in first, second, and so on it goes well when using dollys. It also takes 4 people. Two that pull on one side and two that push on the other makes it easy.

The lift I planned to buy needed 90 to 91 inches depending on what tires where on the car to stack two of them. It was the garage door openers that hung too low by about 3" to clear the second car's roof. The lift was just narrower than the door tracks on the side so they weren't in the way either. So I'd say if you had manually opening garage doors you wouldn't have any problems with height clearances for 3rd gens.

Re: First three, then four, now five in a three-car garage.

..Can't stack them? Fine. Turn them on their sides. I'm going to go out on a limb and say a thirdgens are less than 7ft in width. Obviously, you have enough room to T-bone an extra camaro, so in-and-out space isn't an issue.

..Put them on a rotisseire and go horizontally-vertical. No?

I'm not a convertible expert, but as an owner of one, I had thought it was not recommended to store one with the top down/folded?

You are right JT. That is why I didn't go with the lifts as a storage option. I would have had to leave the tops down for clearances. These are down for pictures right now. If I leave them down for a any length of time thou I don't put them up till it is sunny and hot outside or I use a heat lamp and water mister to stretch the top and get out wrinkles when it's inside. Outside, I loosely pull the top up, but don't clamp it down till it gets good and warm. Once I clamp it down I spray the wrinkles with a mister and leave it in the sun to dry. This helps to get the wrinkles out of the cloth.

That is a very nice garage. I should have made the ceiling as tall as yours. Then I would have had enough clearance to put in lifts. That is the ideal 3 car garage. When I built my place 18 years ago I had been collecting 1960-1963 Ford Falcons and had them stored in a separate garage. At one time I had 10 of them. I sold all of them before moving into my new place and promised my wife no more collector cars, only drivers. If I would have started to plan for more storage space in my new house's garage for additional cars I would have been getting a divorce attorney, if you know what I mean? That is how I ended up with your conventional 3 car garage!

Mine? I wish! Just a pic I've saved that I found surfing the web.

I wouldn't have the Ferrarris if it was mine. Maybe 1 of the Porsches & most likely have the Chevy.

How short is your ceiling from being tall enough? You could always look into going down, or raising the ceiling height while not having to touch the exterior roof.

It is a pain to have to move the cars around, but Hagerty insurance for classic cars requires they be in a garage to be insured so I don't have a choice. It is great insurance for collector cars compared to my other insurance company which is Allstate. I have 12 total cars insured between the two companies so they are taking me to the cleaners. I have to down size some day. I just love my third gens so much is why I put up with it.

Re: First three, then four, now five in a three-car garage.

Now I know that when I have my own house built some day, to make the garage a 6 bay that's about 35 feet deep, so it can easily fit two cars in each bay. 12 spots, incase I go on a collecting spree!

I hate my 2 car garage, it's not even really a 2 car garage. I have the IROC basically smashed up against the wall, where you can't open the driver door, and with the Mustang pulled in to where it has enough room to open the driver door, you can't open the passenger door of the IROC either. I don't mind too much since the IROC is my project and I only drive the Mustang for now.

But when I pick up another DD, it'll be a serious pain. I'll just push the IROC into my shed on the back of the garage that's big enough to fit a car, and have to I guess pull the Mustang and DD as close to each other as I can. So that there's enough room to get in either car. I'll probably just pick up a little VW Jetta though. Should be skinny enough to fit. Nice collection though man! I'm jealous.

The cars are all original except for batteries and some tires. The paint is also original on all of the cars and none have been touched up anywhere. Three of the cars have never been driven in the rain. The wheels on the 1988 Iroc convertible are currently OZ Racing wheels, but I have the original wheels and tires with only 17,000 miles on them and the car. The 1989 Iroc convertible has a set of 1989 Iroc wheels I had chrome plated and then powder coated the 2 grooves and around the lug nut openings in white to match the car. But I do have the original wheels and tires that came with the car. The 1985 California Iroc has Firestone Firehawk SVR tires on Gold rims currently, but I have the original gatorbacks on grey rims that came originally on the car. The 1992 Firebird Formula and 1988 Firebird Trans Am GTA Notchback Both have original rims with newer tires. Other than that they are all original.

@ Warg (sorry - meant to quote your post but screwed up)...

Why don't you just get a side mounted garage door opener (mounts to the right or left of the garage door on the inside of the garage)? That way, you don't have clearance problems with an opener mounted in the middle of the garage ceiling.

That is an excellent idea that I didn't even know existed. I built this about 20 years ago, that was the dark ages of garage technology. I'm going to look into that. Thanks for the suggestion. If I do what you just told me I would have room for 6 cars stacked on lifts. Then my daily driver car a 1992 RS that sits under a carport outside could be stored indoors. Here is a picture of my poor driver car that has to stay outside. This car is 100% original with a 305 TBI, Auto. The 16" wheels were factory ordered for the car in 1992. Some folks thought you couldn't get them on an RS.
