92 Camaro Restoration

I have just started the restoration on my 92 camaro RS and after pulling all the interior out i have found more rust than i had anticipated to find as always. my question is how much rust is too much, before you start over and buy another car. I have owned this car since i was 15 it was my first car and i would love to keep it, i have a good bit of money and time invested in this car, but it is badly rusted on the firewall and front inner fenders so should i start over or complete the work on this car?

Re: 92 Camaro Restoration

I have seen cars a lot worse then that get restored. It all comes down to how much money you want to put into it and how much time you have to do it. If you can do the majority of the work yourself then you will be saving a ton of money on labor.

And if you are emotionally attached to the car then that makes it a little bit harder to let it go. Its not hard to find another clean third gen out there if you look around either.

Thats not so bad at all! Try working on a car from the 50's.. talk about rust.. I would fix what rust there is and paint it. You could make your whole engine bay look brand new (essentially because it would be). Remember, you will never have another first car.

Re: 92 Camaro Restoration

thanks for the fast replys and your opinions, i agree it could be worse and i am very attached to this car because it being my first car, i will be doing all the work on it my self so i am going to give it my best shot at all this rust and see where it goes. Also, would i be better off removing the dash to fix the firewall?

If it were me, I would remove the dash. It is up to you, but I think it would make it a lot easier to find all the rust.

Re: 92 Camaro Restoration

im in the same boat as you kinda, i have an 88 rs that was my first car and after having engine problems i parked it until i had the money to fix it. after letting it sit behind my grandparents for 8 years i decided to get it going again, sat down in the drivers seat ant the seat dropped to the ground, the whole underside of the car is completely rotted so then i aquired an 82 berlinetta that im using for the shell to convert over to my 88 but once again im running into a lot of rust on the drivers side mainly, gonna replace the floorpan on that side and do what other repairs are needed to bring the 88 back to life. my point is that it all comes down to how much the car means to you and how much work your willing to put into it to save it. i know i could buy one that doesnt require all this work probably for less than what im gonna have into this one by the time im done so maybe im foolish but the car means a lot to me plus theres a lot of pride and satisfaction in doing the work and seeing what youve accomplished in the end.

Re: 92 Camaro Restoration

@891-92camaro Did you ever finish this? I'm in just about the same boat as you with a 92 RS t-top 5 speed. Would love to see pics and finished product if you followed through with the restore.
