picking up a 86 Firebird 5.0, think I'm getting a good deal...

So I'm purchasing a 1986 Firebird 5.0 in the next couple days for $900. It's from a very good friend of mine that got into a car accident (not in firebird) and can no longer drive. The only thing it needs is new tires, paint (it is currently primed) and a new interior. Think I got a good deal? Been dreaming of owning an older car since my days in Iraq looking through classic car magazines.

Also Random question, it is a hard top....is it possible to make it a T-Top?

Thanks!

Paint? Full interior? Tires? That $900 Firebird is gonna turn into a $2500 investment. You say you want T-Tops as well?

Skip it. Save up and get the one you want. Unless you are looking for a project. I wouldn't consider it unless it is rust free, a 5 speed or in general a T/A.

It is rust free, however automatic. I wouldn't drive it much, more of a restoration project.

As long as you know what you're getting, and that to have a really nice car you'll spend many times your orignial investment, have fun with it. Base Firebirds are getting harder to find, and as long as its solid, it shouldn't give you an extreme headache. Rust can be the worst part of owning these cars.

Sounds like a deal to me. Some people think that a car that needs work is never a good deal, but the fact is, even $3k doesn't really get you much when you're looking at these cars, so for $900 as long as you have a good running car with a nice rust-free body, it sounds like a deal to me. But, you do want to make sure that you're honest with yourself when it comes to the costs associated with getting it where you want it to be, because without a doubt, you'll pour more than it's worth into it getting it how you want it, but there's nothing wrong with that unless you're expecting to sell it for a profit later

I say go for it if its running strong. You have freedom to fix it up anyway you want to. That's the best part about these old cars.
