Clean, low mileage 86 Trans Am

I'm going to look at this car tomorrow. It's an 86 Trans AM, 39,600 miles, T5 trans, etc. I'm assuming it has the LG4 but won't know until I see it. A dealer has it listed for $6000. I have always stayed away from dealers, but this doesn't seem to be a bad price, does it? When I called I got the usual... It was owned by an older women and garaged it's whole life story. It does look exceptionally clean in the pics, just needs a headliner. What do you think?

Checked vin, it does have the LG4. Are nice, lower mileage lg4 cars going for 6k these days?

If its as clean as it looks, 6k is fair imo, but that doesn't mean you can't haggle. I really like that car. Color is great, hardtop and a t5 car. Nothing wrong with a lg4

Dang, that thing looks super nice! Car should easily be worth that if it's what you are wanting.

Re: Clean, low mileage 86 Trans Am

I concur on the seats...Pallex seats should be two tone. But with the low miles, maybe its just the pic that makes them look odd?

He's had that car on eBay a few times. Be aware it needs a spoiler as well...see how the pic of the RR shows a weird bump in the spoiler? Plan on spending $500+ paint for a fiberglass replacement.

Interestingly optioned car, with only an AM/FM radio but having power mirrors. I think with the low miles and nice condition $6,000 is fair. Just don't expect a barn burner...LG4 sticks are slow...

Good question. Does anyone know? The gap between the rear seat back and driver side trim panel looks weird.

I love this style, year, and color scheme of the Trans Am. I previously owned the exact same combo, but it had an automatic. It was a nice car, but I got bored with the LG4 performance. Hoping a 5 speed will provide a little more enjoyment.

Pics of my old 86 T/A (had regular firebird seats in it)... http://s10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...%20%20%20sold/

Not sure how I missed it before...those are 87+ base seats. See the charcoal door panels? The seats should have that color for the inserts...

I didn't notice the spoiler dent. I liked the 86 only black spoiler, but as you all know, the inside frame would rust causing them to split open. I was siked that this one looked great.

How recent were the Ebay auctions?

Re: Clean, low mileage 86 Trans Am

Ebay auctions were in the last 60 days...I think high bids were in the 4s, but the car is worth more than that. I think $6k is a decent deal...if it was TPI it would probably be worth at least $1,500 more.

If the LG4 doesn't bother you, I'd snap it up in a heartbeat. The stick is definitely nice to have!

I like the 86 only spoiler too...my replacment came out sweet with my new paint job!!

Re: Clean, low mileage 86 Trans Am

I'm kind of bummed about the seats not being original. Why would they need replaced on a low mile car? The seats in there now look like they have been recovered. Should of just recovered the originals. Maybe the spoiler dent or bump can be straightened out with some careful heat? Then again, they probably would have done it if it could be done.

Re: Clean, low mileage 86 Trans Am

The spoiler is toast at this age...they all are. I already have a spare fiberglass one for my 88 sitting in the garage, as that one is split too. Use that as a bargaining chip, or accept it and buy one anyway. Its not a critical thing IMO...simply par for the course for buying an old TA

Re: Clean, low mileage 86 Trans Am

They are definitely not 86 TA seats,86 did not have the plastic trim on the side of the back of the front seat and the inertia button should be on the back of the seat not the side, and ALL 86 had the two tone pallax cloth with graphite inserts with matching door panels that also is graphite. Is this seller listing it as all original??If they are what else are they hiding. If not I think it's a good price, the car is really nice looking.

Yes, with a paint that mimicks the rough finish of the 86 spoiler.

Re: Clean, low mileage 86 Trans Am

Yes 86 was the only year it was mounted on the hatch...87+ intergrated them into the spoilers on both models UNLESS it was a base Camaro coupe with no spoiler. I haven't seen one in years, but I have seen 87 Sport Coupes with a hatch brake light, as there was no spoiler to mount it to.

Many people don't like the hatch lights, but it certainly doesn't bother me. I like the look of the spoiler without the light stuffed in it, and at least its different...

Just noticed something! The hood vents or louvers are painted red. The 86 I had these were black. Repaint? Now wondering if this is a 139,000 mile car advertised as 39,000!

The only reason the hood louvers should be painted black is if the car is black.
The mesh under them should be black anodized.

The car shows me to be a 39k original, short of the seats. Those louvers are correct...my red TA has red ones, my blue TA has blue ones. Indeed, the mesh under them is anodized black.

Wonder what the deal was with my old 86? I know for a fact the paint was original. The louvers were black plastic, not painted...

Slick,
Nice looking old 86 you had Someone popped those puppies out of the hood, painted them, and threw them back in again, or swapped in OEM black painted ones...my guess is to match the spoiler and side moldings?

manta,
I think what you believe to be a switch is actually just the shift indicator plate, showing the shift pattern...

Re: Clean, low mileage 86 Trans Am

Did the 86 TA's really just have a flat black spoiler thrown on them like that? No one seems to be paying it any attention and some google searches reveal that at least 3/4 of them ahve flat black spoilers. The ratio I would expect of people that would hypothetically repaint factory black spoilers body color (kind of like how about 1/4 of late Fox body mustang GT's have body-colored ground fx these days)

Is this just because so many of them are old and cracked and damaged and replaced at this point and it's just accepted as normal? Or did GM really install spoilers that didnt match the paint?

And I think that 86 spoiler looks way better than the newer aero wing. What did tehy use in 85?

Re: Clean, low mileage 86 Trans Am

Yes. The 86 spoiler was a molded rubber like spoiler, not fiberglass. The metal frame inside them would rust over time causing the rubber to split and bubble. That's why some you see have been replaced with a painted spoiler. The rubber one isn't available.

85 used a painted spoiler but it didn't wrap around the sides of the window.

1) Yes, it was a satin black rubber texturized finish.

2) I debated on painting my replacement wing body color when I painted the car back in August. Now that the job is done, I'm really glad I painted it black. Its different. With the black interior, as soon as I tint the windows, it'll look really good...

It kind of identifies the car as a 86,kinda like the third brake light up on the glass.

Re: Clean, low mileage 86 Trans Am

Exterior of the car was nice. It was pretty dirty from sitting. Clear coat is all swirled/scratched from bad washing techniques. I think a good buff and polish job will take care of most of it. Had weird looking side body mouldings and one of the inserts were missing. A couple scuffs or scrapes and the spoiler had a slight warp or dent. One wheel had a 2 inch rub or curb rash mark. Car was undercoated when new, but no rust at all.

Re: Clean, low mileage 86 Trans Am

Interior was nice. The headliner was already replaced. The seats and carpet could use a good cleaning, and I would actually replace the carpet if it were me. Everything worked in the interior except I don't think the AC blew cold. The heater core was disconnected because it needs replaced. The dealer pointed that out. It needs a new battery. He said it hadn't been started for 2 weeks, and when I tried it was dead. As soon as he hooked a jump box to it it fired right up. Actually sounded good and ran smooth. No leaks, engine and underhood was clean, or at least 39k clean. I didn't drive it because at this point I knew I wasn't going to buy it. He told me up front that he wouldn't go lower on the price as he already lowered it from a couple months ago. I think I would have paid 5k for it.

They say that just so you wont negotiate. I bet if you told him you would take it for 5k, you would have gotten it. It's a pretty dang nice ride. I would have paid 5k for it easily. There arent any nice one's like that around here any more.
