87 TA Trans Rebuild/New

I was wondering ballpark, what would a trans for an 87 TA run installed?

I recently took my 87 TA out to begin restoration, hasn't run in 13yrs - been in a garage.

I'd figure between $1,000-3,000 for a quality rebuild. Pretty big spread I know, but really depends on who's doing the work, how much they're replacing, and what kind of warranty it will have when it's done.

Re: 87 TA Trans Rebuild/New

ok so 1800 on a rebuild is not bad.

Should I consider adding a shift kit ? Will I gain much from it?
-Engine started right up!!!

what is the mileage on the car? if it has low mileage, the trans could still be in pretty good condition. it might only need to be re-sealed.

DEFINITELY get a shift kit. get a TransGo - NOT a B&M.

i'm thinking 15-1600 for a quality rebuild with the shift kit.

123K on engine, trans I think was around 60K, (was pulled from a junkyard - hence why I had another problem

Guy redoing it thinks there is a possibility that the trans may be ok... Concentrating on getting it running right 1st.

original trans died, started slipping. At the time being 19/20yrs old I didnt have the cash to throw a new one in so I opted for the cheaper way out.

was this before the car sat for 13 years? the reason i ask is because fuel that has gone bad, or other fuel delivery problems (bad fuel pump, for instance) can sometimes be mistaken for transmission slippage.

Re: 87 TA Trans Rebuild/New

yeah sat after the 2nd/used trans went.

They are doing a major tune up, new carb , plugs, hoses , fluids etc. draining the tank new gas.

Engine started right up, no smoking....car wants to run.

said the body (underneath) is excellent. They haven't seen one in this condition. They like that I'm piecing it too vs saying yank everything out and re do x...y...z

I know I could buy one for what I'm putting into it... thats not the point. It's my 1st car that I actually owned. more sentimental than anything else.
