New owner 1985 IROC 30k Miles
I traded my 1980 Z-28 for it. I really love this car still smells like new. Runs perfectly. unmolested.
BTW I didnt see a FNG thread. Hey I am new.
Yes it was repainted as the original finish was faded, god bless texas.
I am getting decals, if you can let me know where the best place is to get them it would be appreciated

Why are the decals missing? Repaint? I did not think the decal delete option was available until 1988.

Wow that is a beauty! Congrats on the great find! Welcome to 3rd Gen. Love the color, does it run like its new? Dash pad is mint. Would love to see the 1980 you traded.

Welcome to the board! Nothing like the feel and new-car smell of a low mileage, well-kept original. Nice color, nice options on that one. Now, just get the damn stripe kit on it and the purple tint replaced with some beter quality tint, and you'll be good to go!

Very nice 85. A little jealous at the condition of yours since I have an 85 as well and has no where near 30k miles.

Stripe kit will be going on as soon as I get some recs from you guys as to where to buy it from.
Also where can I get the measurements for the application?
Will techron hurt this motor?
Will K&N filters mess with the MAF? The PO installed some and I am not a big fan.

Hello matt1970pon!!
RPO codes do change their meaning sometimes, and the "up to date" code 86A today could mean red/gunmetal, but when the code was used in 82-89 (based on my parts manual) it was Lt Silver/Black which matches my car!!
As for the G92, it's funny because, GM3 denotes the 3:45 axle ratio, not G92, G92 was just a marketing RPO that told you/GM that you had the performance axle ratio!! I had the 3:45 axle but, long story made short, I didn't get it when I bought my car in 1988, someone else got that part!!

P.S. I just checked out another site's decoder, and get this: 86A Stripe Color Accent, Two Tone, for a 1993 is Raspberry/Black, and for 1991 is Red/Gunmetal, yet they both have 86A!! Proves my point about the change up, so your 1987 IROC 86A is Lt Silver/Black like mine!!

You have gray wheels and a black interior. So you should have had silver/black striping and silver IROC-Z decals originally.
The best place to get them is Phoenix Graphics.

Re: New owner 1985 IROC 30k Miles
G80 gets you "limited slip differential" or positraction. Glad to see that you did some research on the color stripes. Most people don't. GM reused the codes when the model that it was on, didn't use it anymore. This car should have the black and silver stripes, with the silver on top and the IROC-Z door decals towards the front of the doors. The stripe package comes with the correct placement for the lower stripes, but I'm not sure of the door decals having a placement guide.

Very nice car! I think it's unusual to see that color combo, most of the blue cars seem to have a gray interior. The blue cars could have had the black/gold striping, but they would also have matching gold inserts in the wheels, so obviously you're correct that the original stripes were silver/black.

Very cool! I love that color blue. Can you post a pic of your rpo codes. The decal delete option came out in 1985 on the California IROC.

Re: New owner 1985 IROC 30k Miles
Congratulations on a really nice IROC. On the repaint whoever did the work not only removed the stripes but they also removed the RPO-B84 body side moldings. But then there are many that don't like them except for orginality. As has been mentioned said stripes should be black/grey given the wheel accents are grey, the black interior and the rocker emblem are black/grey. It's interesting that heavily optioned car doesn't have t-tops. You even have rear discs, pwr antenna and mirrors - very cool.
This IROC reminds me of the one that sits in a yard about 10 miles from where I live (been there for over 10 years). She sits behind a fence and there's never anyone home.

I noticed that, what type of side molding is that? Is it that big thick rubber and revets stuff?

Just restored or woke up MOLLY's POWER
30K miles I have put on 180 miles on her since we picked her up tuesday night.
The front end rattled horridly, seem the front sway bar end link bushing had dry rotted off. I replaced them this AM. and OH MY LORD this thing can handle!
MOST IMPORTANTLY: the shifts were soft and only shifted at 4400 rpm. No second gear scratches nothing. I just figured it was old and thats what they did.
WRONG!
I reset the the TV cable correctly and OH MY GOD this thing turned in to a hard shifting 2nd gear tire burning beast. WOW! it gets sideways in 2nd!
It made my day!

I believe your '85 would have the one piece rubber (urethane?) body color style to go with the softned lines (plus it was easier to install in production). My '83 has the two piece riveted style.

Re: New owner 1985 IROC 30k Miles
Your IROC-Z chirps 2nd? What condition are the tires in? Strange for a stock car, especially one without G92. You do have 3.23s though, which aren't that far off from the 3.42s. Yes, they do handle very good.
This is a nice car but it will be so much better with the correct stuff on it. I know you ordered the stripes and decals but don't forget the Tuned Port Injection ones for below the Z28 emblems. You should also get the rear bumper TPI emblem, Classic Industries or Hawks probably has it. The bodyside moldings on this car in 85 would have been the thin style in black, not body color. IMO, I'd leave them off, just be careful!

GU6 is 3:42 gears btw
G80 is locking diff

Re: New owner 1985 IROC 30k Miles
Yeah, he does have 3.42 gears. Has the GU6 option. I orginally thought these gears only came with the posi in 85 but Charlies is non-posi and also has 3.42 gears. Apparantly, most of the 85 Camaros did. It is turning up to be more common in 85 then I orginally thought.
My father's 85 TPI will also break the tires loose and kick the car sideways in second. 85 IROC and 85 TPI Z28's are secert performers.
1. Hotter TPI camshaft (same spec as the 87 350 tpi cars)
2. 3.42 gears
3. More aggressive shift pattern in the trans.
Don't be surpised if an 85 IROC with the above could clean up a stock 350 TPI car since most of those cars were only packin 2.73 or 3.27 gears and the lighter shift pattern in the trans.

Ah cool, maybe that's why then. Weird that it doesn't have G92, 85 is a strange year in some ways. I wish those gears were available in the 9-Bolt. My IROC-Z would do the same when I first got it all stock, but it's an L98 with 3.27s and had pretty worn tires at the time. Since it's a faster and more powerful car it's easier to see I guess. (only 10 HP difference but 55 lb.ft. more TQ) When I had the tires and TQ converter changed on the same day it never did it again! The only other stock Third Gen I've heard of/seen do it is my friends 92 Z28 L98 G92. If I had to have an automatic 305 IROC-Z I'd probably want an 85 G92.

Beautiful IROC-Z!!! Not sure if anyone ever answered your question about the k&n filters, but no they won't hurt the MAF, I ran them on my '87 Z-28 never had any issues (I owned that car for 4 years). I have them on my '91, but it doesn't have MAF (I've owned her for 10 years now and God willing she's not going anywhere). I've never used techron, but from what I read on their web site sounds like a really good product.
