Re: ON A SEARCH FOR MY OLD CAR
First part of the VIN isn't going to locate a car. I would start with the DMV. They can look up the full VIN per your title ownership history. You should be able to pay them a small fee to search the VIN if they still offer the service. It's been years since I've played with VIN's but I had to track down the original owner of a '69 Firebird I used to own to obtain a new title for it several years ago.
Re: ON A SEARCH FOR MY OLD CAR
You will not find the car or even have any chance at starting to search for the car with that part of the VIN. The second half is the part you need to remember, not the first.

You'll need the full VIN number to search any state DMV records if they offer the service. Hopefully, you have that recorded somewhere.

Re: ON A SEARCH FOR MY OLD CAR
I wanted to do something like this with my GTA, only the other way around. I wanted to locate the previous owner/owners, but all I got was the run around. The DMV told me that I'd have to fill out a form, pay a filing fee, and would still not be guaranteed a response.
I don't understand the huge privacy issue with this. What are they ultimately afraid of? Are you going to come over the original owner's house and stalk them or something? Now, in your case, I can understand the logic somewhat. If you previously owned the car, they would be afraid you have a second set of keys and would want to steal it or something. However, if I already own the car and want to contact the original owner, there shouldn't be a problem with that.
I think after playing the DMV game, you're going to end up at a dead end. I think the only way to do this properly is to bribe a DMV employee, befriend a cop or hire a private investigator. Hmmm, I wonder if anyone here works for the DMV? lol!

Re: ON A SEARCH FOR MY OLD CAR
Autocheck or Carfax will give you the latest registration info. That will at least tell you where it's at, or even if it's still around. From there, not sure how you could find it. I don't think DMVs would release current owner info.
I took a quick stab at trying to find my old '84 Z28 HO a couple years ago. It's last registration record was in Illinois where I used to live, but it was from 2009. Nothing since. I figure it was either parked, stolen or is rotting in a field some where.
Good luck with your search.

Re: ON A SEARCH FOR MY OLD CAR
well carfax said it hit a culvert which is a large concrete structure, in Louisville TN. airbags deployed, and moderately damaged, which in other words they totaled it. 3 days later it was picked up by someone and they renewed the title on it, so it is either parted out or someone put it aside for a future project. this does not stop my search though, it could still be out there, so i will still look for it, if it is still out there, its bound to turn up sooner or later.
