I'd prefer that to the 85 in your profile with a swapped-in 350. Give it some thought...that would be an awesome car restored...

I hate to say it, but i am not going to restore the recaro, i am going to use the trans out of it and possibly the rear and who knows what else. I may sell what is left or sell some of the parts i do not need. More than likely it will become junk.

Re: rare recaro edition trans am / breaks my heart
I was looking at it today it has a factory electric fan on it, i guess the ricaro ta got electric fan, i also found out there were only 1321 of these made. Sad this one is in the shape it is in. Also this was the last year they made them.

Re: rare recaro edition trans am / breaks my heart
Well for now i am putting my 350 in my 85. I may think about it some more. I have yet to pull anything off of it. I will give it more thought. I only got it for the 5 speed. I had no idea what it was until i researched it. The guy that had it, had no idea it was a ricaro ta. He bought it wrecked, and he was going to use the drive train for his project , but he sold off his other car , and decided to sell this one. I may think about selling it to someone that wants to fix it and use the money to buy the parts i need.

I do not know if it runs or not, it has sat for over 7 years, i did not even try to start it. I winched it on the trailer The guy i got it from bought it, and drove it to his house over seven years ago where it sat until i picked it up.

Re: rare recaro edition trans am / breaks my heart
DO NOT JUNK THIS CAR!!!!! You have a real diamond in the rough with this.
Sell your '85 and use that $$ to fix this one.
It's unique, rare, and you'll almost always never be a "me too" guy with this car.
It's not as bad as it looks, and it'll be a great car when done. The '84 is the best year 3rd gen, imo. It has one year only details, has the better/ earlier style interior, earlier better build quality, and you have a top of the line model, too. I am genuinely envious.
If '84 cars were smog exempt here in CA, I'd offer to buy this off of you.

LMAO so you got that car ?? This car was for sale in Oklahoma last year and I was going to buy it for $450.But the guy was moving to Nebraska or some @!% like that and wanted it gone ASAP !!! .I had my hands full with other cars and had to pass on it.Now I'm really KICKING myself for letting it go
And guys again I have seen this car in person and it has SERIOUS body and water damage.Hate to say it,But it's a gonner !!! Not worth the restore IMO.
For example last month on my local cragslist,There was a '84 recaro 5 speed car for around $4000 !!! and it was CLEAN !!! ready to drive !!!
Not cool judging a car in this condition just by looking at pics without SEEING it inperson...... SHEESH !!!

How shot can it be? Are the strut towers and firewall rusted out or crunched? Is the frame rusted in half? Beyond that, I'd pay $450 or $500 for that car, sight unseen, just on the basis of it being a Recaro T/A with an L69 5 speed.

Even if you just stored it somewhere, in 20 years that car will be something car enthusiasts will die for.

Re: Rare Recaro Edition Trans Am / breaks my heart
I think you hit on the main reason why we are telling you to restore the damn car!!!!!!!!!!!! Along with everything else you already knew about it, its got the right engine too! I'd be willing to bet your 350 Trans Am, assuming its just a generic 350 long block out of a truck (like 90% of them floating out there) would get smoked by this L69...

Re: Rare Recaro Edition Trans Am / breaks my heart
Another new member coming to the enthusiasts forum to show what they have that they are parting out. Why don't people that plan on doing these things, keep it to themselves? After you've stripped the car of everything you want and have gotten rid of the remainder, please come by and show us the car you built, but I really don't understand all of these people showing enthusiasts a car they plan on junking.
I would love to see the reaction of some of the first genners that get new members on their forums showing a 69 Camaro with minimal body damage, but the owner only wants the 396/375 with the TH400, 12 bolt rear and scrap the rest! The car is too far gone if the body is all rust, but I can't see that from here.

Re: Rare Recaro Edition Trans Am / breaks my heart
Guys, there's nothing wrong with parting out cars if the car is worthy of parting out. Many businesses make good money parting out cars. It's just shameful when a car gets parted that can be restored. If the rear of the car was crunched by an 18 wheeler, take what you can and part it out because there is no fixing that! This car can be restored by somebody willing to spend the money (based on what I see only). Unless there is excessive "frame" damage to this car, or excessive rust, it looks doable. It won't be cheap, but it looks doable.

Well, I can't see the car and didn't see the car in person, so my comments were made generally speaking. I need to take your word for it that it's in bad shape. In all reality, that car, even if restorable, is beyond my ability and finances, so....

My car is as about as rough as this, most of all the original seats are gone, this recaro one looks complete. I mean come on if i'm fixing this. Then this one is possible too!! Mine needs a new quarter panel, door skin, hood, and both fenders. The list goes on. My point is the recaro TA should be restored by someone who will appreciate its rarity.

2) I did not say you are the only person who parts third gens. I have had far, FAR harsher words for other people who have parted out far cleaner cars than this one. You know...the ones that actually have an ENTIRE car, that runs good, looks good, etc. They ask too much money for it whole...then when they get mad they can't sell it, they part it for 60% of what they were asking and junk the shell. No, I do not make this up.
3) I restored a ubiquitous 91 TBI RS that, other than the crunched fender on this one, had some real similarities in the amount of work it needed. I turned it into a garage queen. It can happen. Why did I do it? I had love for the car. This car deserves a shot. If I had room for it, and it wasn't 1,500+ miles from me, I'd see if the OP would be willing to sell it.
4) I don't have a ton of respect for people that part decent cars...that part restorable cars. Have you forgotten where you are? This is an ENTHUSIAST website for these cars...not "Auto Recyclers R Us."
And you wonder why I get irritated by this crap? Get it, "buddy"????

"Last time I checked" TGO is for ANYTHING third gen related,Not just for Enthusiast. And FYI we have a classifieds section and people have allot of parts listed from parts cars, you wanna go and harass them also ????????
Seems to me and what you posted above you just like "troll/Flame" people for parting out THEIR car ??
And as you mentioned your far from the car and probably won't offer/have enough $$$ for the OP to care,So just shut up and leave it at that. Why start talking BS to people about something YOU can't do anything about ???
And again I can talk SINCE I HAVE SEEN THIS CAR IN PERSON !!!! IT'S ONLY GOOD FOR PARTS !!!!! All of you have posted BS have only seen PICS.
Man you have issues
MODS: I smell a troll/flamer problem.Do you REALLY allow this type of behavior/attitude to represent TGO ??

Re: Rare Recaro Edition Trans Am / breaks my heart
This is the USA isn't it? Land of opportunity and capitalism. When the opportunity presents itself then one must strike!! Otherwise to the victor go the spoils. I don't see this a good vs. evil matter. Just a small window as to what makes us all able to own what we want and do with it as we please.
While I would love to see that trans am get restored as much as any other limited edition model what about the recaro that will ultimatly be crushed in order to save this one? It's Darwinism at its finest!
Is the car still available for sale? $500 isn't alot really. I kind if see it like this.
You can't stop and save every kitty running in the road, right? You know what's gonna happen but there are just so many. Keep on driving and tell yourself it will be okay. Who knows? Maybe it will.

Re: Rare Recaro Edition Trans Am / breaks my heart
We have had this conversation plenty of times here. I am not defending the guys that part out perfectly good cars. But when someone like Dave parts out a basket case, it helps out the Thirdgen community.
I have bought from Dave and others who parted cars to get parts I probably wouldn't have been able to find otherwise.
Does this car deserve saving? I would say yes considering its rarity, but I have never seen it in person. We haven't reached a point with our cars that a total basket case deserves saving. That car would require a minimum of 20-30K to get it right, probably more. What is it worth when it's done? Maybe 8K if the market comes back and it is a beautiful resto?
I am throwing a ton of money into my 1982 Recaro with paint and interior work. It will not be worth what I put into it. But for me it is sentimental, having owned the car for 23 years. Would I buy one like the car in this thread and sink a ton of money in it? Definitely not. There are cleaner Recaros out there. There is one for sale over on Earlythirdgen for 7500 bucks with 30K miles and the guy is having problems selling it.
I don't think you can really jump on the OP for not restoring it. I just take issue with posting it and saying it's getting parted out.
I have bought from Dave and others who parted cars to get parts I probably wouldn't have been able to find otherwise.

You claim I have issues because I hate seeing people cut up cars that I care about? Cars that could be saved? OK...you're absolutely brilliant...and it shows in your posts.
Because I have great respect for the Admin, Webmaster and Moderators of this particular board, I will kindly exit this thread stage right. But before I do, I would like to remind you that Scott hit the nail on the head with something...
Why flaunt on this board a car you intend to part? You simply invite it on yourself. And I am the troll? Yeah, ok...nice advertising for your business, by the way. Start arguments with veteran members on public forums Brilliant career move...

Goodness, Jason is no troll 3rdgenparts, more like the farthest thing from it. What he is, is passionate about the cars and would like to see them saved if possible instead of parted for cash.....as many of us do. You just have a differing opinion. He's right though, this kind of reaction is to be expected on this board. There is also no reason to call names in here, so lets make sure it stops now.

txkenneth: Power wash that car and make it more presentable, and I'd bet that you could double your money if you sold it as is. If you could get it running, (even badly), you might triple your money. Just something to think about...

I am having my front seats re-upholstered and the shop I took them to has been looking for Trans Am Reccaro 'pig skin' seats for months. They cannot any anywhere. That is the trouble with some of these older limited run cars, stuff you need to complete a resto project are simply not available.

I have some nicer recaro seats that are simple to fix in a Daytona 500 Pace car I need to chop up and get rid of, you can private message me a phone number and I can call you or the place to talk to you about them if you want.

I'd like the arguing to stop. We've said our part and 3rdgenparts and the OP are the only ones that have any knowledge of this car. After we've given our opinions, if txkenneth still feels the car is too far gone, then that's his decision. It might be. I have seen many cars that look great in pictures, but once you get up close, they are basket cases. Let's let txkenneth decide the cars fate.

I think the shop said these TA seats are for a 20th anniversary edition, I don't quite remember exactly, but the pig skin seats he is looking for are called Parella seats? Is that correct? I'll let him know.
