Re: Rare Recaro Edition Trans Am / breaks my heart
20Th Ann Ta's have the beachwood tan "Ultima" seats same as any GTA.Recaro seats are a COMPLETELY different seat.
And recovering RECARO seats aren't cheap either,As of now no RECARO seat kits are on the market. So it has to be a "Custom job" or you can try like others and search and win "Third gen lottery" and score original RECARO seat material !!
Also,I have sold many RECARO seats in my time and one of the guys I sold to paid something like $1000 to recover them But of course prices vary depending on where you live and who you know lol

Thanks for the info. Next time I'm in his shop I'll ask him exactly what seats he needs to find. No big deal.

Re: Rare Recaro Edition Trans Am / breaks my heart
My good friend is an original owner of an 84 Recaro T/A Hardtop. I should send him these pics, what a shame. He used to haul a lawnmower around in his, different story though.
I’m hoping some smart upholsterer someplace has copied the patterns on the Recaro seat sections because that’s about the only way to do the seats right, is to un-stitch the covers, trace them, and sew back together. The foam replacement is also problematic. I think a good way to make some money is to get a donor set and copy the patterns down, maybe digitize them for a cutter machine and crank them out. You would still need to find a good upholsterer to sew them together because its not that easy, at least to do it right.

Re: Rare Recaro Edition Trans Am / breaks my heart
If this car is still being parted, I would be interested in the wheels if still available and in decent shape. I own an 84 Recaro but it is missing the stock color wheels.

wow, what a shame. reminds me of that one thread with marokid destroying all those nice cars. my guess is the car is probably gone since he has not replied about your wheel request.

Re: Rare Recaro Edition Trans Am / breaks my heart
It seems pretty complete, for as rough as it is, which makes it pretty cool. Restoring it would make no financial sense at this point. That car is worth about 10k in mint condition. You'll be at least 2 or maybe even 3 times that by the time all is said and done. But that's just right now. 5-10 years from now? We can hope there's a higher price point by then, especially very rare cars like L69 Recaros. So personally, if it were my car and I had the room, I'd clean it up, put it into proper storage, and wait. I wouldn't strip any parts off of this. My $.02.

Ooops, just now noticing the date of the original post! Hope this Recaro isn't a carcass in some field somewhere and he did clean it up and put it on ice.

Re: Rare Recaro Edition Trans Am / breaks my heart
I replaced the following:
1)Original numbers matching Q-jet was shot. Bought a remfg. Q-jet and I still have the original carb. I plan to try my hand at rebuilding it....Then again, I might send it somebody who knows what they are doing, since it is THE original q-jet..I would like to see it as my primary carb one of these days.
2) Original muffler was rusted out real good. Replaced that and the cat with Magnaflow cat and cat back system. Sounds great!
3) Car was still hesitating and leaking a bit of oil, so last summer I:
a) Changed the valve cover gasket, but it still leaks a bit..Maybe its the dipstick?
b) Changed the Canister Control Valve
c) Changed the EGR, but I eventually disconnected it, this actually made the car drive SO MUCH better
4) Changed the plugs, wires, rotor and cap. Set the timing.
5) Replaced the Idle- stop solenoid with a NOS replacement.
6) Replaced the steering wheel (I don't think it was stock, because it did not have the "full" leather wrap on it) with a full leather wrapped wheel off of another 1984 T/A.
7) Replaced the shifter **** with a correct leather NOS ****.
For the most part, the car is very driveable and fun... During the summer months, I did notice quite a bit of hesitation that was about 70% remedied with the carbueror shield plate that sits just aft of the primary. EGR,CCV and timing. I suspect that the fuel is getting too hot, so my next idea is to see if the fuel pump at the tank (if installed) is working and replace the water pump, thermostat, and possible go with a 3-core radiator. Also the air dam needs to be replaced, probably try that first...
My emphasis at this point is to:
1) Address the "grinding noise" eminating from the back seat area
2) Suspension may be the original, looking to overhaul it with SFC's, Koni's panhard bars, wonder bars, etc,etc,etc..
3) Clicking noise from engine during start up... Overhaul the L69 (Thought about the ZZ4 conversion and "pickle" the original L69..we shall see) with new Cylinder heads/Headers/Intake/Cam...New PROM to keep up with it..
4) Tranny - Probably address before the L69...Not sure, I might take out the T5 (NO intention to throw it away) and replace it with something "Beefier"

Re: Rare Recaro Edition Trans Am / breaks my heart
Actually, no big issues .... Need to go into 5th gear before going into reverse, other than that.... Nothing .... I heard that the T-5 can take about 300 horse and 300 lbs torque. Was thinking to go big with the tranny eventually just to play it safe.

Re: Rare Recaro Edition Trans Am / breaks my heart
My WC T5 in my 1988 TBird is the same way. There are no syncros for reverse, so you have to stop the gears from spinning first before you throw it into reverse. It is like the truck boxes that need to be double clutched. I usually throw it into 1st and then to reverse. I bought my T5 new from Summit, and it has done it from day 1. The box I replaced did it too.

Re: Rare Recaro Edition Trans Am / breaks my heart
LMAO so you got that car ?? This car was for sale in Oklahoma last year and I was going to buy it for $450.But the guy was moving to Nebraska or some @!% like that and wanted it gone ASAP !!! .I had my hands full with other cars and had to pass on it.Now I'm really KICKING myself for letting it go
And guys again I have seen this car in person and it has SERIOUS body and water damage.Hate to say it,But it's a gonner !!! Not worth the restore IMO.
For example last month on my local cragslist,There was a '84 recaro 5 speed car for around $4000 !!! and it was CLEAN !!! ready to drive !!!
Not cool judging a car in this condition just by looking at pics without SEEING it inperson...... SHEESH !!!

I still have the car, and yes i have pulled some parts off of it. Sold the recaro seats to a guy on the internet that had been looking for seats for his recaro for years. Glad he was able to put them to use.

Re: Rare Recaro Edition Trans Am / breaks my heart
I've done some work to the 350, new cam, lifters ect. It now has a new intake , holley double pumper. I put on a serpentine system on it. It now has the t-5 in it out of the recaro. I pulled the rear end out of the recaro (3;73 posi with disc rear) and put it in my car. I've replaced bushings , and shock, struts. Just been tinkering on it here and there. I may go with a t 56 some day. I really do not drive like i did when i was younger , i am sure i could make the t-5 last. I am going to do the most important thing any older guy can do to his hot rod soon. Fix the ac ,and convert it to 134a, i have everything , just got to do it.

Re: Rare Recaro Edition Trans Am / breaks my heart
Although this is an old thread, there was one question about this car nobody seemed to ask, and that is whether this car has a clean or salvage title. If it has a salvage title I think it's potential value restored would be much less than that of a similar resto or survivor with a clean title. I could be wrong, but in my mind a salvage title is typically a kiss of death when it comes to value and desirability.
Rather than be upset with txkenneth for parting out over restoring, perhaps it’s the previous owners who let this happen all here should take issue with. Why is it txkenneth’s place to pay to restore what others ruined? He’s not the bad guy. He just needed a tranny.
Just offering another perspective.

Re: Rare Recaro Edition Trans Am / breaks my heart
The seats are probably the most valuable part to these cars, Guy i know parted out an Recaro T/A that I had been eyeing for a couple years thinking about buying and restoring, but the body was all but gone, rust blisters all over and fenders and quarters rotted out. Interior was close to mint, he sold the seats to some guy over seas for $1200, $700 for the seats and $500 for shipping.

I can't make an offer without seeing the wheels in person. Can you give me a price? If they are in like new condition with no chips, erosion, curb scabs or fading they are probably worth about $400.

Re: Rare Recaro Edition Trans Am / breaks my heart
yes, that correct. However I have searched high and low for the color code and have had no luck. I painted mine with a rattle can I bought from Classic Industries. Big mistake. They swore it was the right color, but not even close. I even called Pontiac and they could not give me the color. If anyone knows where I can get it please let me know.
