Picking up an '83 Recaro T/A tomorrow

Title pretty much says it all, tomorrow after work I'm going to pick up an '83 Recaro Trans Am. It's a carbed T-5 car, so I assume its an LG4. The L69 was only available with a T5 though, correct? I'll find out tomorrow. Factory wheels are still on it. Body looks very straight, hood and drivers fender look to have been replaced and need paint. I don't know anything else about this car's options other than the rear window wiper I saw in the pic. It's also a WS6 as opposed to a WS7, so its got 4 wheel discs. I'm very excited.

I've been reading through threads in the History / Originality section for info, but is there a site or registry with some good detailed production/restoration info out there?

Apparently there was a shortage of numerous optioned parts, WS7 packages were identical to WS6 EXCEPT that it included rear drum brakes instead of discs.

Additional RPO's were created due to limited availability of the G80 rear in early 3rd gens as well.

Hmmm.........Car sounds kinda funny

I specialize in '82-84 Firebird's and have had some Recaros in the past. The WS6 shortage was a mid 1982 production thing.

When possible,Can you post pics of the car and the Data plate(credit card size metal on driver side radiator support area) ??

If it is a legit '83 Recaro with a FACTORY manual trans then that's a pretty RARE car !!

I'll definitely post what I find, I'm skeptical myself. Hopeful but skeptical. Lol

Re: Picking up an '83 Recaro T/A tomorrow

I went out to look at it and almost didn't get out of of my car. The corner of the drivers side core support and the fender support is crumpled like a beer can. There were broken studs in the axle. The rear panel had a big hole carved out I'm assuming to drill through the hatch lock cylinder. There was a large hole drilled through the gas door. The Recaro seats, if they were ever there in the first place, were replaced with what looked like ratty 4th gens. To top it off, the entire car was filled, all 4 floorboards, with trash and food waste. I couldn't see the floor. There was a lot more that I won't mention.

Needless to say, I passed. I'm still looking for a decent 'bird!

Sorry to hear man, it's a shame how ppl treat their cars. But I know the feeling of looking at them when they are in such bad shape but I'm sure you'll find the right one sooner or later! Good luck.

Re: Picking up an '83 Recaro T/A tomorrow

Well, I found the right one! It just happened to be a Second Gen! I went to go look at a 1979 T/A, T top, WS6 car. The car has been stripped down completely and all body work and primer is complete! Zero rust. It's got a rebuilt 403 and brand new dual exhaust all the way to the rear. I made an offer and the couple, who were selling it for their son, accepted.

They gave me the car's PHS documentation and I began reading this along with what's left of the build sheet. It's a Y84 car! I'm very pleased with my purchase and I look forward to researching so I can restore this S/E properly.
