Re: Helpwanting to buy 91 firebird

Its a good deal for the car if you talked him down to 1400.00 Doubt that it just has 137 miles. Maybe a 137,000 miles or 100,137 miles. If the problem is just the TPS, they cost around 30 bucks or so at any parts store. Its possible that its still good and just needs adjusted. Car should still start and run good though. I would check out the car to make sure that its still in good shape. Not been wrecked, no major rust. Good luck.

90-92 tps are non adjustable, usually they are $50-60 for a good name brand standard motors or ac delco. you didn't disclose the drivability issue he is having. If it has the factory multitech's I would be looking at a set of injectors for sure.

You can run a carfax if you want. Doesnt hurt. Didnt know that the TPS on the SD tpi's werent adjustable. I thought they were on all tpi motors. I own an 89 iroc so mine is adjustable. Its been a long time since I bought a TPS so I figured that they are little more expensive now. I'm with tunedperformanc, I'd ask or check out to see what the running problem is. I'd also check out to see what, if any codes it might have if thats possible.

TPI stands for tuned port injection. Thats the fuel and air intake system set-up on irocs, Z28's, formula firebirds, gta's and some trans ams. Can always tell by looking at it. Its what the car your looking at has.

Re: Helpwanting to buy 91 firebird

TPS problem? Maybe, maybe not. If it's that simple the seller should have already done it. I don't like the sloppy wiring and plumbing underhood, especially the ignition wires. This could be a sign that he's chasing down a problem, or it might just be because of age.

$1400 isn't a ton of money. It doesn't look rusted in the pics, but check it out closely before you buy. That's a problem you don't want to deal with.

Is there a bite taken out of the spoiler?

Hello from aurora
1400 seems like a good enough deal.check for rust on the underside and in the 1/4 panels as that is where Colorado cars rust.usually u get rust in the 1/4 before the the floors here.also check for abnormal knocks or ticks in the engine(the stock Injectors tick so don't confuse the noise with valvetrain problems).Make sure the tranny shifts correctly through all gears.if everything checks out ok ,ur golden and it's time to go cruise with the tops off.

Re: Helpwanting to buy 91 firebird

Personally it seems to me that the owner has had problems with it running and may have been just guessing what is wrong. With a new fuel pump and intake manifold gaskets I would want to be cautious as to the TPS sensor being bad. I would assume that is why he is selling it instead of fixing it.

So possibly the car is having problems with running, so that why he got new fuel pump, intake manifold gaskets, and the tps may need to be changed?

Re: Helpwanting to buy 91 firebird

It is a possibility that the owner was trying to fix a problem but did not know what to replace so was throwing parts at it based on someones it might be. It probably runs but not right and in this scenario the TPS is just a guess.
My car wasn't running when I bought it and only runs marginally now. They knew what was wrong finally but had given up on it. I ended up finding more and more wrong with it and so it is in line for a 350 TPI swap with a T56 transmission. Mine is just a lowly V6 for now and was eventually slated for a V8 from the moment I got it.

Re: Helpwanting to buy 91 firebird

I have a 91 TPI car and the faulty TPS made mine run like crap.

Be very careful when buying a TPS and make sure you get one for a TPI car as they are different and more expensive than the TBI version. The TPS is visible in the engine bay shot, it is just to the right of that gold anodized fitting in the center if the screen.
