Re: Need Help. Questions about car and value ('86 Camaro)
I did realize that it was a hack job and I have not pursued that deal any longer (Orange 1988). What I'm considering now is the 1986 Camaro IROC-Z in Pontiac.... What the above messages said confused me. Is it possible for an '86 to have that kind of air intake? Or is it an LT-1 conversion? If this type of air intake came with the 4bbl carb, then it isn't a TPI like he advertised...

Look at that door carefully though, make sure it opens and closes like its supposed to, and that it lines up properly.

Okay, so the 1986 IROC-Z did come stock with that type of air intake?
What I will look for:
-Any frame damage
-Door alignment/closing
-Car "pulling" due to previous damage
-Shape of undercarriage
-Double-check VIN/RPO's
-Rust on interior floor panels due to T-top leakage
-I'll have my uncle check out the engine (As previously shown, I need to "read" up on my engines"
-Check all the fluids
-I'll try to bring some jacks to help better see the undercarriage
Anything else you guys would look for?

If the T-tops are leaking the T-Top bar will start to rust out under the rubber molding. The rear hatch can leak as well. However the floors rust out from people dragging salt water in with their shoes (and not so much from the T-Tops or hatch). The salt water can leak through the carpet padding and sit on the floor underneath. Some are equipped with deluxe padding which is has a thick rubber backing which won't allow anything to get through.
The hinges on the doors can go bad but can be fixed. You should be able to move the car with the door without it being loose. You can check the front fender from the inside of the door opening; the inside of the door from the top of the window slit; and sometimes the hinges where they attach to the door or body. Then turn around and take a phillips head and remove the vent by the door catch on the body, and try taking a look down there. I don't recall how well you can see from the vent but I've used that to work the metal from the inside in the past. Also check the rear where the spare tire sits.
One other thing I forgot is having your uncle follow you to make sure the car is tracking correctly.
those are all my opinions so take 'em for what they're worth.

But again, you're looking at spending $1500 that needs some body work, paint, interior detailing or replacing, etc. You could spend upwards of $5k easily with all of that. For $5k, you might be able to find a car in much better shape with original paint that doesn't need as much work. Again, if you spend more up front, you can enjoy the car 'today' and not have a work in progress that could take years to complete. Just my opinion.

also, WTF is with the carberator and TPI style air intake ~ and still no functional air cleaner
that car is a hack job.
also, never buy a car sight unseen. and be particularly wary of people who want to close the deal off of eBay.
