OK, so the cat's out of the bag...Jason wants either a Formula or an IROC Convertible
Looking at that 86 TA on eBay last week made me realize how much I miss my TAs, so wifey has agreed to let me buy a lift for the garage to make room for another third gen...likely a Formula. IROC convertibles are kind of an afterthought...not sure if I like the roof hacked off a car with questionable structural integrity in the first place
So, I plan to be like Charlie, and post a couple things I find intriguing to get second opinions (sorry Charlie, but we have a rep to uphold!!)
So....
http://hartford.craigslist.org/cto/3222381638.html
I remember talking to this guy a little over a year ago...his daughter put a lot of the miles on the car. He was asking $8,500 then, but now he's at $6,500..maybe lower? TBI sucks, but its as reliable as the sun. I want something a little bit more of a driver this time so I don't feel as bad putting a few miles on it. With 44k, its not uber-low on miles, and the ONE THING that never gave me an issue on my RS was the TBI system. My IROC throws random SES lights on start-up...I traced it back to an unobtanium MAF relay. Flick it with your thumbnail, restart it and all is well
This looks like something clean and nice to turn the key and drive. I figure if the power gets to me, a 3.42 gear swap and some TBI mods will wake it right up.
Just looking for a fun, reasonable mileage cruiser at this point. The color, options and t-tops really caught my eye!

Made me laugh too!! Never thought of that one!!
Seeing it at 6:30 tomorrow...he has a little flexibility, may have all the original paperwork, and it sounds like a very nice car. Needs hood and hatch struts, a power antenna motor, and a spoiler. My kind of car
Paint is supposedly perfect, and the interior would be perfect with a little bit of carpet scrubbing. We shall see tomorrow...

I saw that one in my classified web search this morning, looks great in the photos, let us know if it looks that good in person. I also saw this one today, 1988 blue 5.0L TPI, 5 speed, no t-tops. 49,xxx miles. Too bad it too far away to go look at.

Garage lift?!? I never even thought of that. My ceiling is high enough for two more cars on top of my current two. I officially now hate you. Thanks for the idea.Originally Posted by Jason E

I honestly like that one better. I had a Maui '89 years ago, and I'm partial to the color. I also prefer the TPI 5 speed combo as well, and its still under 50k miles. I found a maroon '90 that's at least a TPI AT, but its got 65k miles for the same money.
The other car I am contemplating, for $3k more, is a 19k mile 89 hardtop 350. Obviously a better deal on a better car, but its in Indiana...

Or, you can be like me and already HAVE a 4 car garage, stuffed with 3 F bodies and a pickup, and still want lifts to add more to the madness Originally Posted by Slater126

So, I looked at the Formula tonight. Very solid car. Spoiler is dead...hatch motor is dead...looks like an intake gasket leak...small things like the power antenna and drivers lock motor are dead. Otherwise, its a beautiful time capsule of a car. The interior is mint, the outside is near mint and 100% original...and it drives nice and tight.
I simply cannot drive a 305 TBI/A4 car. Its too damn gutless. I drove my IROC down to look at the car (on purpose), and driving it back I couldn't believe how much more power the IROC has. I know...duh. But still, driving them back-to-back was a revelation.
Now I'm working with a guy on here to buy his 89 GTA...we shall see if it works out. If it doesn't, I still have a guy trying to sell me his 2002 SS convertible with 17k on it that the wife is drooling over for herself. Might be a nice way to get her obsessed with cars

Supreme Member
Jason, That 2002 SS sounds sweet, but I thought you wanted another TA or Brid?? The 98-02 4th gens's are sweet and fast, but I still like the 3rd gens better. Well keep us posted.

Eh, the wife decided she doesn't wanna spend the money...we were gonna try to get him to agree to $17k, which he probably would have. That means a car payment, and we just paid off her 04 GTP and my 05 HD Ram. She doesn't want a payment...and I wouldn't spend that much money on a car for myself unless it said "Official Pace Car" on the side of it, and it happened to be a white, turbocharged motor vehicle
Once I said no, the Formula guy dropped to $5,800, which is a screaming deal given the condition. I could put 3.42s in it, and a crate motor, and still be under 10k on a 13 second Formula. But to me, it wrecks the purity of that car.
I do want a third gen Firebird...with wifey not wanting payments, the door is open for me to grab something under $10,000. We'll see what I can find. Its probably more prudent for me to get my lift bought and installed first, though...

Nice car! Thank you! I may send an inquiry momentarily...the only downside to it is no t-tops. I took my Z28 out for a couple hundred mile road trip down to the CT shore on Sunday...just love having the t-tops off. I think I'm pretty much stuck going with an 89 GTA or Formula...but that car for under $9k is intriguing.Originally Posted by puma1552

I have a line on a 19k 89 the guy will take $9,500 for, but he's further out, and its white. Unless its a GTA or TTA, I just don't care for white on a Firebird.

Thanks for the heads up on yours as well...I appreciate it. If it had 30k less miles, I would give you the asking price immediately. I'm looking for something with lower mileage.Originally Posted by zimmstoy

Jason, I agree that T-tops are awesome. I will not have a TA or Camaro without them. I know it's far, but look on the Akron/Canton Oh CL. There is an awesome gray 87 GTA, L98 T-tops with about 50K on there. It's a canadian version, but has a clear Oh title. The guy is aking $8500 for it.
I will not have a payment on a toy. I have 2 cars, a truck and a Harley and only have a payment on the 2012 Koup that I don't drive half the year, but it's not 100% a toy so i'm ok with it. The rest were paid for in cash.
