Formula / TA ?

I was just wondering what exactly is the difference between the 88 formula and the 88 Trans Am? Most of all I've seen is that the only real difference is like the dash and small options. But nothing precise.

I would be able to tell you for sure if I had my parts cd or my historical book in front of me.

In general the Trans Am get ground effects. I believe the Trans AM uses a bumper without the slots cut for the inserts, while the Formula has the inserts. The TA also has the flat hood with 2 vents while the Formula has a "tear drop" or "power bulge" hood.

Yeah the Formula does not have the GFX, in fact it has differant bumper covers, the wheels are differant, hood is differant like stated above. Mechanicaly they are really the same. I like the looks of th TA better, but the Formula does have a nice simple look to them.

Re: Formula / TA ?

The Formula is basically a Firebird body with the Trans Am goodies like engine, suspension, brakes etc. Exterior is the same as a Firebird except for the hood with the power bulge, wheels and the Trans Am's wrap-around spoiler. Taillights and facias are the same as in a Firebird. The idea was to make a Firebird that performed as the TA but costs less. The advantages of the less appointed Formula is that weight is lower than that of the TA so performance should be marginally better, given the same powertrain is chosen.

Re: Formula / TA ?

I think the Trans Am had additional sound insulation as well... Think...

Yep, my '89 Formula 350 weighed in at 3262 lbs. The T/As are closer to 3400 lbs.
