What is my Trans Am?
Ok I have had the car for quite some time now but have yet to figure out what exactly it is rpo/option wise. The ones on the door are painted over and the ones in the console are gone, so could someone help me out?
What I do know is it is a Trans Am, has a 9 bolt and has 16 inch convex rims, and 140 mph speedo.
The vin told me it used to be an lg4... and thats about it.
So is the car a real Ws6?
What was the factory rear end ratio for this?
Could the car have came with the bird on the hood? Someone painted over one but I have no idea the 86 even had the option.

Re: What is my Trans Am?
These are some of the things you would have if your car has the WS6 Performance Package. The LG4 with with the 5 speed manual trans were Standard for the 86 TA,LB9 and L69 were Optional. The rear I think, would have been a 273.The 140 speedometer was standard on the TA and your car could have came with the Large Hoodbird, that was available in 86.

also I didn't know the 9 bolt came in a 2.73 ratio, were there any other ratios for 86?

Re: What is my Trans Am?
According to my 86 sales brochure, the 4 wheel disk brakes would require a limited slip differential, mine has a G80,Posi Traction,Limited Slip W/GH3,2.77 Ratio. You can checkout this thread for rear sizes.
https://www.thirdgen.org/1986-pontiac-firebird,
Just out of curiosity, does your P/S lower dash have the Performance Suspension Badge.According to some, having that badge does't mean you have it,but I think in 86 you got that badge if you had the WS6 Performance Package. But then again Rally Tuned Suspension(MacPerson Strut Front Modified) was Standard for 86 on all the models, and the gas filled shock absorbers were only available on the TA with the WS6 package.

Re: What is my Trans Am?
It might be, for 86,otherwise why would it have it.I don't understand.I know they had bean counters in 86,why would they go through the expense of adding something that isn't.

Re: What is my Trans Am?
The only reason I had said that is because I had read on here that not all performance suspension cars were ws6. And after crunching the numbers on the final drive Im sure it is a 3.23 because it turns roughly 2000 at 70 mph (If the stock tach is right)
Re: What is my Trans Am?
The performance suspension badge was not part of the WS6 suspension package. The performance suspension badge was for the optional suspension package above base, which means it will have FE2 & F41. If the car is WS6, it will have the performance suspension badge but if the car has the badge that doesn't automatically mean WS6.

Re: What is my Trans Am?
Let me get this straight,If the base for 1986 was the Rally Tuned Suspension and the optional WS6 was the next step up then it would have the badge right? The FE2 and F41 are only listed for the 90-92 models.
Re: What is my Trans Am?
Being a 1986, I might be off on the RPO codes.
But the fact is the "Performance Suspension" badge came on cars with and without WS6. It has been a long standing misinformation that the "Performance Suspension" badge meant WS6. All WS6 cars should have that badge, but not all cars with the Performance Suspension are WS6 cars.
Regarding the FE2 and F41, FE2 is on SPIDs on atleast 1988 ThirdGen cars. I know this discussion came up recently:

Re: What is my Trans Am?
Very Confusing, maybe we should poll the 1985 and 86 TA owners if they have the badge with or without the WS6!!!!.I say 85 & 86 because they are basically the same and it's always 85-86 owners who ask this question a lot.How do you poll ????

Re: What is my Trans Am?
sorry for asking an often repeated question, if I had my rpo's I wouldn't bother with asking this stuff, but its nice to know what I have especially since Im getting to start replacing bushings and stuff. On that note am I correct to say front sway bar is 34mm? I know there is a 36mm size but Ive never found information to information to support that it could be on an 86.

Suggestion, you could buy a window sticker from http://phs-online.com/order.htm it won't tell you everything, but it will tell you what options your car came from the factory with(RPO's).At least you'll have those and you could find most of the Standard equipment RPO codes that the car came with from here on TGO.

If i have some extra money I am very interested in the window sticker as the car is loaded, power everything even mirrors.

Re: What is my Trans Am?
My 86 is pretty similiar to yours. From your discription, yours sounds like a WS6. Mine 86 is fully documented, and it is a WS6 with a TPI engine. The nine bolt diffs are part of the WS6 package, and most of them have 3:27 gears. All of the nine bolts are posi units. There should be a tag on the cover of your diff.
I have an original dealer order manual, and factory service manual for the 86. I also bought the PHS info package for my car, and have printed every piece of information I can find on these cars. The large hood bird was an option on the 86. You can get a nice reproduction bird from Phenoix Graphics. If you have some specific questions, fire them at me, and I see if I can find out the info. I love digging up the history of these things.

Re: What is my Trans Am?
I hate to bring back an old thread, but I've got an 85 T/A and I'm trying to figure out for sure what gears it has. I read farther up on this thread where savage 88 said he had crunched the numbers and his car turned 2000 around 70 mph, well mine turns 2K just above 60. My sticker matches my vin so I know its right, but I can't find a gear RPO like GU5 or GU6. Am I missing something? Is there another RPO I should be looking for? I've searched till I'm blue in the face and can't find what I'm looking for. And as far as the poll from farther up... Mine is WS6 w the performance suspension badge. The codes I do know I have are LB9/ WS6/ G80.
Re: What is my Trans Am?
My 85 has the P/S badge, and a nine bolt posi,no idea if it's WS-6 or not or how to tell without the rpo sheet.
Re: What is my Trans Am?
Take a picture of your RPO sticker and post it. You can blur the VIN if that is a concern. Or you can email it to me jt@thirdgen.org and I'll take a look at it.

Re: What is my Trans Am?
Does your diff have a tag on it? These cars come from the factory with a sheet metal tag attached to the diff by one of the bolts that hold the cover on it. Most WS6 cars have a 3:23, 3:27 or something close to that.

I like the RPO decoder - handy dandy, only like 2 codes it couldn't decode.
GW6= 3.27 in 89 on 5.7 also ...FYI

Your Welcome!!!For some reason I can't download TGOs decoder.I have that one book marked.
Re: What is my Trans Am?
The link posted above isn't complete and comes with the same warnings that other stuff found online comes with.
Look at Y84. It lists it as GTA package. That's true for 1987-1992 but there was ThirdGens before 1987 with the Y84 code and it wasn't the GTA package.
