New Iroc project: Comments? Pics

Gonna pick up a new F-body. This will be my 4th one since 92. and my 6th project car

Previous: 88 Firebird v6 stock
89 Iroc 350 auto stock no ttops.
92RS 305TBI t-5 (worked to a 14.3sec car NA and 13.6NOS)
96 Honda Del Sol 5sp
88 300ZX Turbo Auto

This new one 88 IROC 305TPI auto. I am just thinking clean up interior new paint, bolt on suspension mods, new rear gear, (has G80), and just get engine to running stock and add exhaust, intake polish cam and tune. And have fun if it goesthen just swap the LB9 ( short block with l98)

what ya think good roller? Body looks all original even the decals and paint and no damage signs or repairs under the panels I can find even all original stickers in rear quarters. Minimal rust just at t-top beam which I have a replacement one for, interior needs new carpet and dash pad, engine kicks over tranny is shot.

I do not think or pretend this is rare by any means. For me I like the 305 underdog and the TPI I have not played with (otehr ones were TBI and the l98 was trashed and I was broke before I got to do anything) So I hope this car wakes up nice with some TLC and gives me the fun torque of a v8 and sound a TBI did not have.

Re: New Iroc project: Comments? Pics

Pretty sure that's not a true iroc. It might have the stickers.. But there's no B4Z code. wrong wheels, wrong taillights.. ect.

Re: New Iroc project: Comments? Pics

Tails were replaced, the real ones were inside the car and he sold the iroc rims and swapped those one. fogs sold too. Stickers look legit and it is a 1988 when IROC options was dropped.
In 1988, you could not purchase a Z28 that was not also an IROC. All Z28s were IROCs by default in 1988, so GM no longer used both "Z28" and "B4Z" RPO codes. Instead, they dropped "B4Z" and just used "Z28" on the SPID. In other words, for 1988, No "Z28" (RPO on the SPID)=No IROC.

However, if your SPID is missing, the eighth digit of the VIN may be able to tell you what you have:

IROC Engines:

E (LO3)
F (LB9)
8 (L98)

--In 1988, if your VIN shows an "E" in the eighth position, the VIN tells you nothing about the car's status as an IROC, because this engine was available in both the IROC and the Sport Coupe. You will need the RPO codes from the SPID.

--In 1988, if your VIN shows either an "F" or an "8" in the eighth position, you have an IROC, because the IROC was the only model these engines were available in.

--The RPO code to look for in 1988 is "Z28". For this year, No "Z28"=No IROC.

Re: New Iroc project: Comments? Pics

Oh and the rims are 15" rims on it now. in 1988 as well the 15" were standard Z18 from the prior year and mad standard on the Sport Coupe and evne th iroc. it was an option to get the 16" rims on the IROC in 1988

Looking at this RPO code it actually appears ot have the 15" as original tires so it actually came with the 15" from the factory.

Your right. Your RPOs don't show N96 which would have been the 16" wheels that were optional in 1988. The "J" in your vin also shows that it is a 1988 model. Your door sticker will also verify the tire size and year of production. Its a true IROC Z28.
