First registration Attestation
Hi, my French neighbour has just got hold of a 1982 Camaro. The problem is that it has British registration documents that shows the first regisration as 1984. It is very complicated to register it here in France and I need a certificate to show its original date of manufacture that shows that it is over 30 years old.
VIN number IGIAP8775CN1562xx
The sticker in the door shows the build date, but this is not admissable as the door may have been replaced.
If it is not possible , then he will have to wait till 2004.

Re: First registration Attestation
That VIN doesn't look right. If that's what he's trying to register, it's no surprise he's having trouble.
Should be 1G1AP8775XN1562xx.
1st digit should be 1 (US) not the letter I, 2nd digit is G (GM), 3rd digit should be 1 (Chevrolet), AP is the body style and is correct for a Z28 or Sport Coupe, 1st 7 is the restraint system (seat belts), 2nd 7 is the engine (the "Crossfire" dual TBI), 5 could be correct, it is a "checksum" digit. The 6 where I have the large X should be a letter indicating the year; should be a C for 82. That's where the problem is coming from.
That's the global international VIN standard sequence. No government official anywhere, no matter how boneheaded, can argue with it. (although it doesn't surprise me that some officials, in some countries, might consider themselves above international law)

I had not realised that it was an international sequence.
Thanks for that info. It should make all the difference.

Re: First registration Attestation
Since you have the door sticker, compare the vin on the dash to the one on the door. They should match. If not, the door has been changed.

Re: First registration Attestation
There are other places that they put the vin's I believe. Under the center console arm rest on the RPO code sheet, In the Spare Tire area but can't remember where and I think under the hood along with the Door as you already know. When I stripped mine down, I found 3 or 4 smaller data tags that were about 2 inches long about about 1/2 inch wide through out the vehicle with the vin on them. I am not sure if this was for theft protection..

Re: First registration Attestation
How about the body number plate, that should have the year on it,along with other pertinent information.
Re: First registration Attestation
The body plate is on the radiator support. It should have some info on it. If the VIN number on the door matches the VIN seen through the windshield, the door is still the original door and they can't dispute that.
You could see if the build sheet is still locked into the bottom seat springs of the passenger seat. Many '82 buildsheets are found there, but not always.

I think I have enough to send them now. I had not realised that it was an international code. Thanks. Now for the tranny leak.
