I have a 1989 Iroc-z Z28 with a 350

Hi, i would like to know which plant my 1989 Iroc-z was produced at. If someone would be able to help me find this out, i'd appreciate it. Also the person who i bought it from said it has the original 350 in it. I just want to double check to make sure it is the 350, so it would be cool if anyone knew how to tell the difference between the 350 and 305.

Thanks.

Look on the top of the block, right in front of where the head meets it, behind the AC compressor. It's like a little "pad" of block sticking out in front of the head. There will be 2 lines of stuff stamped there. The first line is the original engine code. The first letter is the plant where the motor was built at (which WON'T be the same as the plant the car was assembled at, so don't be too surprised when you discover the motor was built 2000 miles away from where the car was). The 2nd line is the last 8 of the VIN of the car it was originally put in; should match your VIN if it's the original to your car.

Easiest way to tell a 305 from a 350, is to look at the casting number; on top of the bell housing right in front of the transmission, right behind the driver's side head. Should end in 638 if it's a 350. If it's anything else, post it and we'll tell you right away which size it is.

What he said about the engine and if your car is an 89 then I was built in Van Nuys Ca. 1987 Was the last year the Norwood Oh plant was open.

Also the Vin should have a "8" for the engine code.

...and if it was an earlier car, you can still look at the VIN. 11th digit is the plant code, "L" would denote a Van Nuys car, and a Norwood car would have an "N".

ANd none of that will tell you what motor is in it NOW, or whether it's the original one or not.

Gotta go LOOK AT THE MOTOR to see what it is; no substitutes. Can't even go off of the "PO said it's a 350, VIN says it was a 305, must be swapped", because POs have been known to ... ,,,aaaahhhh .. uuhhhhm, mmmm.mmm,,, ... "exaggerate" .... certain critical details immediately prior to a tranasaction.
