Anyone care to educate me on an 86 Firebird?
Let me begin by saying this. I do not part cars unless they are beyond repair, and when they can be restored, my husband and I do that. We have 3 Camaro's waiting for restoration now.
I'm big into Camaro's and have learned the majority of the quirks they have- I think. I've become proficient at knowing what to look for in these cars. I've been developing my name on Ebay(I know, naughty word around here) selling quality used Camaro parts, and have been getting asked about Firebird/TransAm parts, and if I would expand into carrying them.
So, I've found a 86 Firebird, guy has had it for years- no title or keys, parts car is the only thing it can be used for.
Tell me about them. What are the codes that are desirable? Color interior that's most popular?
I want to know these cars inside and out like I do the third gen Camaros.
Thanks,
Bethany

Well I have never parted out a car, but I'm fixing up my 92 RS so I have been kinda into the parts game as of late-buying them that is. The PW7 16x8 crosslace wheels are a hot item, the power buldge hood is cool as well and if you find a funtional one even better. I found one a month ago at the yard and could have had it dirt cheap, but no way to get it home ERRR! I'm sure the other guys know more whats hot sellers and not, but alot of the same items you sell for the Camaro's will be about the same for the Firebirds and TA's since they are all 3rd gens and still have alot of the same issues.

I figured there are certain things that are hot tickets just like the Camaro items. I know there are a lot of the same things with the two cars.
If you're looking for anything in particular, let me know. We've even kept and organized every nut and bolt removed- lol!

I'd say gray is by far the most popular interior color...seems like I see lots of reds on the mid-80s cars though.
Firebird specific stuff I always look for: GTA seats/parts, split back rear seats, intact ground effects, mirror/window/headlight/turn signal switches that still have white print on them, intact shiftplates, 3 spoke steering wheels, 91-92 T/A taillights (holy grail), intact 90-92 door panel cupholders, intact 87-92 Formula/TA/GTA rear spoilers, 90-92 door panels, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, intact 91-92 ft bumpers w/ground effects pkg, working power antennas.
Some stuff that you might think would be worth getting but are actually pretty worthless: 1985-92 T/A hoods, 1985-90 T/A taillights, GTA steering wheel radio controls.

I know the switches that aren't worn are a huge hit- those sell faster than I get parts car for them.
Looks like a lot of those things are the same as my Camaro items that go quickly.
Did not know of the door panel cupholders- that's a new one for me.

Tell you one thing that does not sell is 85-90 Camaro rear bumper covers. I have a super clean one and not sure I could give it away LOL! I mean I would take $25.00 for it and still nothing.

Re: Anyone care to educate me on an 86 Firebird?
Here are some pics- just got back.
I don't believe it's an 86.
I believe it's an 89 Firebird Formula with a 350 TPI!
Rear spoiler is missing, as are ground effects, but interior is really clean, and has a lot of nice parts. I'm thinking these wheels might be worth something as well.....

Re: Anyone care to educate me on an 86 Firebird?
Last two pics. didn't get any of the whole car, sorry. My cell camera card was filled up.
Driver's seat is not ripped at all. Only rip I see in the interior is the top of the rear seat.
Driver's side fender is missing, and that part of bumper is cracked up.
What would you pay for it, seeing what you can see?

If it' has a stock 350,it's not a 86,that was not available in 86.those wheels were available in 86.

Sticker on the door was worn enough I can't tell, and VIN plate has rust on it- so I'm going to have to see if I can clean it up and tell.
I feel like I'm back in grade school trying to learn this! LOL!

Re: Anyone care to educate me on an 86 Firebird?
Firebirds/Formula's did not come with GFX and the wheels are not stock 89 Formula wheels, thoes are the PW7 crosslace wheels I was talking about. Seem to me it's a Fromula 350 with Pw7's on it. Did he say if the engine is still good? if so I would pull that as I'm sure someone would buy the L98 with the harness and ECM.
Engine ran when it was parked- with 90k on it, I figure we'll get it running in no time, draining bad gas. Posi disc brake rear, too.
I saw those wheels- couldn't believe it.
I can't believe how nice interior is- white lettering is intact everywhere I looked. Dash pad was in beautiful shape as well.

Before you part it out, you may be interested to know that I purchased an 88 GTA with no title as a parts car. Using the abandoned vehicle title law in VA, I was able to secure a title, and it has been my daily driver for the past two years.
You may want to check on the laws in PA in case you'd like to title it and sell it whole.

Luckily the car was parked outside, and away from the house; but the owner lost title, any proof of having owned the car, and the keys in a massive fire.

I don't know about where you live, but if I lost my title in KY for whatever reason due to fire or I just can't find it, I can apply for a lost title. I find it hard to believe the PO of that car didn't do this. As for losing keys, well that's possible, but only requires re-keying everything. If you can get a title, I'd sell that car whole. Judging by the pics, it's way too nice to part out.

I did some quick research. You will probably have to visit a PennDOT office (in VA I was able to do the whole thing online). I did find this document that indicates that you should be able to do this:

Pull the engine and harness, $500-$600 maybe? the dash pad for the a good price will sell, I myself am still looking for a new one. Refurbish the wheels and you can get some money, sell the clean interior, and if anybody was willing to buy the hood if its not completely rusted through. And if the tail lights are not to bad you can sell them cheap but nobodys gonna pay a lot for them. This is the basic stuff im just listing off the top of my head that us pontiac people normally would look for. If the car is to rusted out and beyond restoration what i listed above should be a good start. BTW if the head lights still go up and down, grab those as well, plus the module. Easy 15 bucks for the module if it works.

If you end up getting it and parting it out, I would be interested in the strut tower brace, some interior plastic trim parts, and some other odds and ends.

Yes, she does. She's had it sitting there for at least 7 years, judging by the amount of brush around the car, I believe her.
