What do I have here?
What do I have here?
I just purchased a road racing 1988 Camaro. It appears the car was originally prepped for the old Firestone Firehawk series. Per the VIN it is an IROC Z28 w/5.7. The car was originally white w/black interior, manual trans (5 spd w/1:1 5th gear), no a/c, 1LE brakes and driveshaft, 3.45 posi rear. It has the TPI motor, but I have not yet looked closely to see if it is a 5.0 or 5.7.
I know this combination does not "ad up" as a factory combination of stuff. The original dash vin plate is gone, we determined the vin from the paper tags on the rear quarter panels. Of course the original logbooks are also m.i.a.
I am assuming this is a "constructed" race car, but I was looking for any other ideas on possible oddball combinations that race teams could purchase for this series.
The car is currently being cleaned up for SCCA Solo II use in ESP and some track day use.
Any input/ideas on anything else it could be or things to look for would be appreciated.

Re: What do I have here?
Yes I read the 5.7 / manual sticky - hence the "constructrd car" comment. Cage and all race gear is still in/with car. The lack of logbooks has taken away the easy path to trace the car. As part of my search I figured I'd post here in case I had missed something (possibly a "body in white" car or it may just be a replacement donor tub). Just fishing for some other ideas or insights

Post up some pictures!!! Would love to see it!
Re: What do I have here?
Pictures coming - may be a week or so.
The car just got picked up this past Friday. It went to the shop for evaluation and some basic prep, then back in the trailer. My work/travel schedule will keep it there for a bit. When we pull it back out for some additional work, I will get some better pictures to post up.
In the meantime - here is one pic of the PO at an OVR-SCCA autocross a couple of weeks before I purchased the car.

Not a fan of the paint, but seems like a cool racecar, keep us posted once you know more about her.

If that's a pic of the actual car, it looks like its a 91 or 92. It has the gfx, spoiler, and hood blisters that you would find on a 91 or 92 Z28.
Re: What do I have here?
Yes that is the actual car, and yes the VIN is for a '88. However, it was typical in the old showroom stock series to "update" cars to current bodywork to keep manufacturer's happy (racing the "current" model). Some of the "earlier" bodywork came with the car still with the Firehawk decals in place.
