Original Guages Variations in Tachometers

I was just noticing after looking at some clusters and they happen to be the 145MPH clusters. Some have differnt Tachs, some different redlines. My 145 cluster which is in an 89 has a redline around 5300 and uses bright orange and red colors. I have also seen 145MPH speedo clusters with 4500 or 5000 redline and nothces for red and yellow. I thought all 145 MPH clusters were the same from 86-89. ANYONE know??
This is what I have in my 89 - see the more defined yellow/red

This shows the second style Tach - not nearly as defined (not just the fact it is faded

Re: Original Guages Variations in Tachometers

Cars with the higher performance camshaft got 5,500 rpm redlines. Cars that didn't got 5,000 rpm redlines.

Starting in the mid or late model year in 1986 the government mandated 85mph top speed speedos stopped being produced. So cars started coming with 145mph speedos.

1986 was different because GM took out the high performance cam that came out in 1985 (when the LB9 was introduced) and put in the LG4 cam. So the 1986 LB9 cars have a 5,000rpm redline tach.

The L69, LB9 with the higher performance cam and all the L98 motors came from the factory with 5,500 rpm redlines.

Re: Original Guages Variations in Tachometers

Thank you for clearing that up. I see so many gauges being sold in a cluster but the tach seems to always be different.

Re: Original Guages Variations in Tachometers

The tach in the second picture appears to be from an 83-84 car

And in 83-84, the speedo would have had the double pointer.

Re: Original Guages Variations in Tachometers

The 1982-1984 cars got the double pointed 85mph max speedo.

The LG4 (1982-1987) and LU5 (1982-1983) cars always got 5,000rpm redline tachs.

The L69 (1983-1986) cars got 5,500rpm redline tachs.

This quote is wrong!

Not all 86 models LB9's got the 5000 red line, maybe in later 86 build, but not the early builds.

Re: Original Guages Variations in Tachometers

Sorry for the confusion. I should have said that the info I wrote about earlier was for Camaro's only.
