Hi all. Looking for assistance.... My RPO codes tell me I am supposed to have a front license plate bracket. There is none. Checked with folks at local GM parts and the part is discontinued. Anyone know where I can get one?

I had someone telling me about this bracket that flips down under the front facia plate and all... Anyone else hear about this one too? Any info / leads are greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: I am an idiot and did not see the vendors list as it is cut off on my iPad...Sorry

Re: 1986 firebird trans am front license plate bracket
The plate holder that the license plate mounts to is a generic GM piece that was on many models. I think you can actually get it in the Help section of the auto parts store. The 2 little brackets that mount the plate holder to the car are specific for the third gen Firebirds and Trans ams. I am sure you could get a set on here if you keep an eye out for someone parting out a third gen Bird that has the front license plate.
If you don't have a plate mounted to the bumper the flip down one is definitely the way to go. I am sure you could find it on Ebay. If you do a search there are definitely some threads here about where to buy it and how to mount it.

The licence plate holder for your car should be still available. The body shop ordered one for my car about 5-6 months ago,the flip up plate holder you see here was purchased by me from ebay,I have not yet installed it(had so much trouble with front bumpers covers, didn't want to mess this one up)
If your having trouble finding the stock plate holder,I'll sell you this one for what I paid for it.I have to find the two brackets that mount to the bumper(I have them)

Found them, these are off my 86 TA.

The "flip up" plate is available from Summit Racing also.

There is a motorized version also, but it is a lot more money. I have them on all three of my birds. Our state has a front plate law, and they strictly enforce it in my area, so for me it was a necessity.

I'm going to check the 86 TA that I've been getting parts from tomorrow. I'll get the liscense bracket off of it if it's there. I'll send it to you for cost + shipping if I get it & if you're interested. The car also had a set of fair t-tops too if anyone needs some just to fill up the openings until they find better ones. Let me know before about 10:00 am Saturday.

Funny you should mentioned your state strictly enforces the Front Plate Law,I just read ,(today)in NJ that, that law doesn't apply to any car registered Historic(25 yrs.) in NJ.Now I have two plate holders for sale

Re: 1986 firebird trans am front license plate bracket
I want to thank you guys for the info. I was able to find the plate back but I am not drilling into the bumper at this time.

I will IM you MANTAGUY to get a price. Damn do I miss jersey man!

I might end up doing a historic plate because the law here is the same. If its antique you need to only have the back plate. That will be in JAN for me.

Thanks ALREDNECK I can get the part but only the plate. GM is saying the brackets are discontinued. I honestly haven't been looking that hard to be honest. Lol "**** the police comin straight from the underground"

Good for all you NJ people! The Ohio front plate law has been challenged a couple times, but always is supported and endorsed by law enforcement. The repeals never get anywhere. Even historical plated vehicles are still required to run a front plate.

Re: 1986 firebird trans am front license plate bracket
Thanks.

mine turns 25 in '14. in WA you are exempt the front plate requirement for 25 yrs and older cars, but if i took the front plate off, there would be holes in the bumper...

Can make up some painted screws or plastic caps to match paint, plug them up. Better than the tag.

Re: 1986 firebird trans am front license plate bracket
I had the bracket on one of my cars and it messed up my front bumper when I removed it... I would try to get one that attaches from underneath, even if it rubs off a little paint it is better than having 4 huge bulges from the brackets when you remove them... The motorized one for shows would be the way to go IMHO...

Honestly I would sell them, but the car has the RPO for them... Interestingly they were not put on in the factory, they were installed at the dealership, even when they had the RPO, the parts were shipped inside the car if I remember correctly.

Re: 1986 firebird trans am front license plate bracket
When I used to have the 85-90 front t/a bumper, I just mounted my plate directly to the bumper. No brackets, just screws. Looked more sleaker without the bracket. The plate had a slight bow to it. This only worked because my state changed to printed-on letters on the plate instead of embossed letters.

Re: 1986 firebird trans am front license plate bracket
I actually found another car in a junkyard, same year, the VIN was close to mine and the car was the same color... It did not have the plate-zits from the brackets, so I splurged on the $25.00 for the bumper...

Re: 1986 firebird trans am front license plate bracket
Hello everyone, I have not posted on this site in a long time. I live in Texas and have the front "license plate problem" and there is no way to mount a license plate on the front of my very low mileage GTA which is going into Autorama this year and I will not be drilling holes in the front bumper. I am giving our legialators hell right now. I do not want to add brackets and try to mount it. i saw a picture that someone else had done and it looked pretty nice, but i will not do it. I see problems with the bracket coming loose or it gets hit in a dip,and air resistance will push back on the backet. Not for me. I decided to look for a Bra cover for the 89 GTA and I would mount the plate to that. It seems to solve the problem for me, but I looked around and do not have good feedback on the products available. I have a 92 TA and had used the bra for years and it looked fine. I don't have it anymore. If someone has a suggestion on where I could buy a good quality product, I think I can make this issue go away. Thanks for reading.

Re: 1986 firebird trans am front license plate bracket
If you make one, make sure it has stiff steel, don't just use flexible sheet metal, use something substantial. Also make sure it sticks out 2" from the front of your car... Then remove it when you come to MI, we only need rear plates (where they smartened up)
