When you look at the pic's of all the cars they listed the Iroc is one of the better looking cars... if not the best looking... IMO

Mint top model IROC-Zs go for a decent bit more than what they listed there. There coulda been more research done for that article. The attention is still good though.

1985–90 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z and Pontiac Firebird Trans AmClick for galleryThe generation that grew up worshiping these icons of 1980s T-top-havin’ New Jersey cool is now entering the collector-car market, so the objects of their teenage lust remain relatively affordable. The third F-body didn't hit its stride until the 215-hp, tuned-and-port-injected 5.0-liter V-8 and*gorgeous IROC-Z*arrived for ’85. The 225-horse, 5.7-liter TPI V-8 was phased in during ’86 and ’87. There are dozens of variations of the IROC and Trans Am available, and most are dirt cheap.Values:*IROC-Z, $4500/$9050; Firebird Trans Am, $5475/$86508. 1989 Pontiac 20th Anniversary Trans AmClick for galleryHere’s the section that matters in Car and Driver’s test of the 20th Anniversary Trans Am: “Our test car scorched the drag strip with a 0-to-60-mph blast of 4.6 seconds and a quarter-mile run of 13.4 seconds at 101 mph. That means, as we go to press, that the turbocharged Trans Am is the quickest 0-to-60 sprinter available in any U.S. production-car showroom—at any price.” Top speed: 153 mph.The 20th Anniversary Trans Am is special because only 1500 were built and because they were all powered by Buick’s turbocharged 250-hp, 3.8-liter V-6 that had been used in that division’s storied Grand National.Values:*$19,600/$23,800

I liked the 360 Hornet. And, at least GM got half of the classics.

Re: 10 collectible classic muscle cars you can afford
Not to bust anyone's bubble, there was a recent survey on TGO, I have not found it, looked, it was a long time ago, but amongst 3rd gen owners even, the 85-90 styling is the most appealing to more people. It all is subjective, some people like the 91-92 styles, others like the 82-84, but the majority preferred the 85-90, probably because it was the longest run, and more people own them. The IROC was in that generation, the birth of the GTA, etc etc...

Re: 3rd gens getting ink...
As this subject gains steam it makes me wonder, just how important mods are in devaluing 3rd gens. If you look at modded 1st and 2nd gens they can bring just as much $$$ as their all original counterparts. I would assume that as long as the mods are neat and productive performance wise that it doesn't matter a lot.

Re: 3rd gens getting ink...
Agreed with all that. Thirds really seemed to hit their stride 85-90.

Re: 3rd gens getting ink...
The values bit is interesting. In my experience, Camaros are more expensive than an equivalent Firebird.

Re: 3rd gens getting ink...
Oddly fact the Firebird had several aspects that made them superior to the Camaro. IE the Firebird came with more standard items than the Camaro, for example there was more "performance axles" produced on Firebird than Camaros. Firebirds actually had a few special cars IE the TTA & Firehawk, that the Camaro did not garner an equivalent. But the Camaro had an "offical" Convertible before the Firebird...

20 years ago maybe. I commute 110 miles daily. I see maybe 1 per week, on a good week. There was a time when they were everywhere. That time has long since past.

Re: 3rd gens getting ink...
Okfoz,
I just climbed out from under Excitement, which has sat collecting dust for the past four years. I thought I'd check in while I get the Trans Am back onto the road. I too, rarely ever see a thirdgen on the road; and now in the summer I see more 2nd-gen and 1st-gen F-bodies cruising around town. I haven't even looked at aftermarket in five years to see what's available.
My Trans Am will be 30 years old in June, and something I'm noticing is that many of the plastic parts on the interior are getting brittle. Several tabs broke off even though I was careful when reinstalling the center console. It's going to take some careful repair to get it back. Also the plastics are showing some fogging on their surfaces even though the car has been covered and stored in a climate controlled garage where it's always 60 degrees.
I expect that this'll be one of only a handful of third gens running around my township this summer; certainly I haven't seen an early third-gen in my area in a couple of seasons.
It's good to see you are still hanging around and active on this forum. Now... I need to go search and find me a thread that helps me decide what to gap my spark plugs at; I've completely forgotten that detail.

Re: 3rd gens getting ink...
Going back to the value thing; value is what someone will pay for the car, modded or stock. I personally would pay a little extra for a car that already has had upgrades WHERE THEY ARE NEEDED. Some upgrades shouldn't be done to a car, but again, that's subjective. I honestly feel that all stock cars should be sold for less, but that's just me.
