1986 TA Hardtop

There is a Craigslist ad for an '86 Trans Am in my local area. The thing I find interesting about the car is that it is a hardtop with no power windows or mirrors. My question is how rare is a car like that? It is an LG4 with 700R4, so nothing special there. It has a white exterior with gray interior. There is only one photo of the inside and it is obvious there are no switches on the console. I don't think I have ever seen a T/A with roll up windows.

How rare I have no idea, but I know in 87 GTA's were available with non-power windows. So if it's available on a GTA, certainly I would think the same of a T/A.

16.5 is steep but to immediately cut it in half, I bet you can get it for 7ish.

Re: 1986 TA Hardtop

As you transition from 1982 thru 1992, the later the car it seems the more options the typical car tended to have. I think this was in part because it was less expensive to offer options in packages than individually, thus why they started giving away option package discounts. The closer you get to 1982 it seemed that more things were individually optioned, and then by 92 everything seemed to be tied up in a package, or in groups of items.

For example from 1989 & on, if you wanted power door locks you had to order power windows. Prior to this you could order them individually...

Re: 1986 TA Hardtop

This car has over 213k miles on the original engine and passed smog earlier this year. I really don't need another one, but it's being offered for $700. At that price it's worth it just for parts!

Re: 1986 TA Hardtop

No way to know how rare. I also have a hardtop 1986 TA with low options, mine even has 2 speed wipers no delay, no cruise, no power windows or locks, but does have a/c. But my car is a tpi ws6 car.

Re: 1986 TA Hardtop

There was tens of the thousands 1986 Trans Ams and probably none of us here have ever seen them all. Since GM did not keep track of options on top of options, or lack of options, and the records for the earlier ThirdGens is not available for a 3rd party, like Compnine, to work the data over, none of us can really give a good answer.

That said, I have seen more than a few Trans Ams without power windows as well as 1987 GTAs without power windows or other convenience options. Those types of configurations may be less common, but likely not desirable without the bigger or better motor.

Re: 1986 TA Hardtop

The comments and information you have all provided is what makes this board so great! The seller did provide the VIN which identified it as an LG4 because the eighth digit is an 'H'. It is missing the rear deck "wing" but still has that one year only third brake light. I suppose that makes it unique. The thing is, I've read many posts lately about how it just isn't possible to find a decent thirdgen. This car has high miles but it's straight and all there at less than a grand. I've read of many of you who pay much more than that for a shell. My point is that if you search long enough and have patience, you will find the car you're looking for.
