Why are our cars not all that desirable?

Re: Why are our cars not all that desirable?
As Buzzlight Year would say, "Onward & Upward"
Nice gains!
Big increases!
That ought to put a smile on the face of the long suffering 305 L03 TBI owner's. Have seen #4 cars sold ~20 years ago for $500.
With all the history of a 2015 thread lamenting slow price appreciation seems like a good time to show a couple of Hagerty valuations.
The slow price appreciation is a compound of a lot of factors. I think the better rust protection as mentioned above greatly improved the 3rd Gen's survival compare to the rust bucket 1st & 2nd Gens. Being in production for 11 years and lots of cars made also slowed it since so many cars survived longer. Not consistently being the fastest pony car also slowed appreciation. GM made way too many stupid slow v6's, very slow TBI LO3, LG4 & slow LB9 (auto) 3rd Gens during their era for the performance reputation to survive intact. The halo excellence of the small numbers of L98, L69 & manual LB9 could only carry that reputation so far. Build, paint quality & reliability of the early cars is overall pretty poor in many cases compared to the later cars. The variety, styling & excellent handling always works as strong points to improve value.
Anyway, other than making sure my 383 LS swapped, 91 RS is properly insured, I could care less what valuation and price appreciation of the cars ends up being. I bought my 91 RS new in May of 1990 to drive and enjoy. 25 years as a daily driver with 389,500 miles on the original drive line no rebuilds before LS swap & restoration. Been told dozens of times the car wasn't and will never be worth the cost of what was spent...I 💯 percent don't care because 401,000 + miles later my 91 RS is still my favorite 😍

Agreed, @Arctic White 91 RS, the person that has to desire it is YOU.
I'm 50... and when I get into my 91 Formula, 305 TPI 5 Speed... I feel like I'm 16... (but a better driver now
It's not all about investment / return / what it's worth (money wise)... at least in my case...

Agree totally.
For me it's not about investment at all. I really don't care. It's my car. It has 42,000 miles on it. It's in great shape. I paid $15K in 2018 and possibly could get more than that selling it now. But it's not going anywhere, at least not for a long time. It's my car.

What's the price of being able to drive awesome every day? The 4K I spent to buy my vehicle and the 1000's I've spent to maintain her. Not to mention the many hours of love, working hard to keep her looking good. The result, the smile on my face when i drive her.

Muscle cars are all about Baby Boomers. I grew up as such and my first new car was 1970 Chevelle L48 engines & it was fast. I owned it for 4 years then stupidly sold it.
However, when I was able to purchase a car from my past, I purchase a 1972 Buick GS and a muscle car of the baby boomers age. Real raw horsepower. I now own a 1984 Trans AM & love the car.

Re: Why are our cars not all that desirable?
I always find hagerty prices high for upstate NY.... Heck I bought an iroc vert for $5300 2 years ago...in good condition...
They also say my 69 ss.,...big block matching numbers is worth $35k....
As we often saw, it worth what someone will pay for it... All my third gens are over 100k miles.... But we'll cared for...I think most price guides are to make people feel good... Not realistic.... If you can get and afford gas...

Hagerty's pricing is pretty close. Not sure of today's value, but they rated a concourse 1987 IROC-Z at $31k and then added 10% for ttops, putting the car at $34k. Many are actually selling for that price that aren't in concourse condition. I sold my car in November for over $42k and it had 21k miles. It definitely wasn't one of these ultra low mile cars, but it WAS very clean.

That car is/was iconic and all over the internet, I bet that helped its value.

Re: Why are our cars not all that desirable?
Well, i cant say i deal in low mileage cars...the best i had was a 70,000 mile 1985 Z28...my current stable has two over 100k....
Hagerty says my 1992 Z28 (purple haze, manual) is worth $15,800 in good condition. This car is not a show winner but did ok in its class with 2nd at the Camaro Nationals a few years back. I think the number is high...at least for NY... the value guide doesn't allow you to enter specifics like mileage, tranny, color, etc. or even location!
Hagerty has my 1988 IROC-Z convertible at $17,500 in good condition.... but same issue with options.. this is a G92 vert....
and i can only hope to get the #2 value for my 69....
at least i have seen third gen values going up the last few years... but it was so nice buying them... i bought three of my cars for $5k or less.... oh well!

My IROC-Z is shown in my signature. I don't have a Facebook account, so probably not me you're thinking of. I had an '87 IROC-Z that was fully loaded and low miles. Your comment about it being all over the Internet is correct when referring to my burgundy car. Not sure what blue/white car you mentioned, but if it's all over the Internet also, it's probably a nice car.
