I ask because the one above 82 FB has a 6 and the one below 84 FB has a 5 and I now 86- 88 has 6 very confusing the way GM or just Pontiac keeps going back and fourth

Firebird
82 - 6
83-85 - 5
86-92 - 6 With GAGES
86-89? - 5 with idiot lights (I think)

Honestly I am not sure why they went from 6 to 5 and back to 6... it seems odd, like soemone said oops, that was not to be installed for 4 more years...

Camaro
82 - 6
83-89 - 5
90 - 92 - 6 (when they went to the electronic speedo like the Firebird)

More or less with the exception of 1982, the mechanical (cable driven) speedo means you got a 5 digit, and the electronic speedo you got the 6 digit.

Interestingly you do not need a battery or the car to be running to get miles on an electronic speedo... I remember picking up my 87 and I had my friend tow it to my apartment, it had not run for 2 years, battery was dead dead, and I drove it... I remember thinking, well at least the speedo and Odometer works.
