Theres nothing really desirable on the car anyway to make paying over a few hundred dollars worthwhile. Any of the parts that that would have been worth money being low mileage are destroyed from rust or water leaks. Watch you get a call in the future to buy the car missing a few things after the owner realizes parting the car out is not going to be as easy or profitable as he thinks.

Re: Here's a sad story....
I actually originally thought there were a lot of nice parts that could be salvaged like plastics and electronics, but now that I thought it through- condensation and being surrounded by moisture or being leaked on scrapped those. Atleast half the interior will be garbage and a good portion of the body panels are shot due to rust. Being its a t-top, the grooves that the seals fit into are gone. Without these lips, the only thing you could do is find a donor - that's even if the rest of the car is salvageable. The wheels- well its been sitting for God knows how long so you don't know if they are worth saving.

Is that MOSS on the side of the door and the rear seat?
Daang... Just the mold inside the car would be enough to kill someone... The entire interior would need to be gutted...

People like the "so called owner" of that once beautiful Formula needs to be taken out back and slapped upside the head a few times.
Awe, it's to late, the damage has been done.
Sorta feel bad for the car

Re: Here's a sad story....
The truth is... Even in perfect condition, this particular car would have a hard time fetching $5000 - $8000 (right now)... If it was a 350 car, or a LB9/MM5 it would have helped a lot for value... I would caution anyone that wanted to "restore" this particular car. In my eyes would be more valuable as a parts car than a resto project. Let's face it, there is very little market for an L03 Camaro, Firebird, Formula, Trans Am at this point in time...
Every now and then there is a really low miles L03 that comes up on ebay, and they really do not get that much attention... People want them to be worth more... but they are not. Unfortunately performance wise the biggest draw to the car is the WS6... And it does not even have the correct wheels for the year...

Re: Here's a sad story....
Here's another sad story.
I took this picture last week. I looked at this car around 2008 but didn't buy it. It's an L03, auto, '89 Formula hardtop with about 50K miles. It was fairly mint at the time. A neighbor ended up buying it and parked it in his front yard under a vinyl tarp, right after that. Poor thing.
BTW, that's not asphalt it's on, it's sinking into the grass. Luckily there's also a tarp under it, otherwise it would be a man made rust chamber. It's probably just going to rot there.
I feel that at some point, I'm going to have to save it.

It'll probably be there forever. At least it's indoors.

Re: Here's a sad story....
I would offer to tow it out of his yard for free since I'm not too far. Stripping the car down and seeing exactly how much money could be made off of it would make for a pretty interesting thread on here.
wrap around spoiler looks to be in good condition, center console and radio pod look like they would be decent if you cleaned them thoroughly. rims possibly in good condition as well although they aren't desirable. taillights as well.
the owner is insane for wanting $1000 for it considering the interior has a mossy ecosystem currently inhabiting it.

i'd buy it for $100.00, i think I am the only human that likes those wheels and would take them off and leave the car.

Typical New England car. PASS!
The craigslist ad was funny but sad.
And that red Firebird... $1500, $2000 to clean it up... you should start a business of this!

Re: Here's a sad story....
No doubt the bottom of that car is incredibly rusty if not destroyed. Interior could be the same way? If it's still for sale today, they must have had offers & are looking for more $ than its really worth to someone. 36K means nothing if its a parts car.... Heck, the screws on the speedo face are rusted. Not a Good sign!
Decades ago there was a 68 GTO convertible sitting near an old building about 8 miles from my home. You could just see at at the right time of year & then it would disappear from sight when the fields & vegetation would start growing around it. Was always there year after year. About 15? years ago, I finally went to do some research & found out the guy who owned it was saving it as a retirement project. He was very tired of people asking about it. By this time the car had already been out to pasture for many, many years. I Took a peak at it & the floors were completely gone. Top was shredded & letting water inside. It was like a greenhouse with weeds growing into the car. Was a dirty shame. car was loaded with PW, PL, tilt, etc. But was really unrepairable at that point. Then a number of years later there was some redevelopment in the area & the car was gone.
I do think people park cars like this with really good intentions of it not being permanent at all. Especially when you see where & how they are sitting. But days turn into weeks, turn to months & years & many of these cars still sit, when it should't be there at all.

He believes the car is worth more than it is and I no longer have the time or the energy to deal with a car like that, much less the owner.

DD9TransAmGTA, you should feel special. He stole a picture of your car as an example of what his could look like!

Re: Here's a sad story....
If he's the guy who has owned it all these years I am guessing he has some emotional dollars figured in there. He probably needs to be approached on one of those days when he's in spring cleaning mode & is tired of it sitting there. I'd at least like to see some interior & under hood shots of the car posted rather than somebody else's car.....

Sure enough. Pictures didn't load the first time through.
What a shame. Looks like it might have been a nice car at one time before mother earth started the reclaiming process.
Even the ashtray is rusty. BTW, what is the slide control on the dash in the center of this picture? Never saw one of those before.......

That's the gain control for the optional factory subwoofer.
