Re: number of 5 speeds

You sure of those early numbers John? I thought the 5spd was only available with the L69 in 1983. Shouldn't it be 3223 for Camaro & around 700 for birds?

It was also standard on the LG4 and V6 and optional on the 2.5L Iron Duke.

It's the other way around, L69 was only available with 5 speed. As Chazman stated, many other configurations were standard or available with 5 speed.

Re: number of 5 speeds

So from looking at the numbers it looks safe to assume that only about 1% of the firebirds made in a given model year were 5 speed cars

Re: number of 5 speeds

For '85 it works out to about 15%. 180,000 produced, 27,000 with 5-speed. Pretty similar for '91. Probably most years in the 10-15% range. These are numbers for Camaros, I don't have production #s for Firebirds.

from the tech data on this site there were 110,000 firebirds made in 1986 so that with the 16,000 sticks made that year its still about 10%

Re: number of 5 speeds

To be honest I do not know if the number of teeth were different... all I can tell you is the V8 & the V6 have different RPOs for the Manual transmission... They all have MM5, but the second RPO of MK6, MB1 and M39 were all different internally...

The MM5 is the provisions for the manual 5 speed transmission, more or less it would be the clutch pedal, the shifter, all of the pieces (other than trans). The other RPO MK6, MB1 or M39 was the actual transmission...

Example from 1990-1992
MB1 - V6
M39 - L03 (also LB9 in Convertible)
MK6 - LB9 (coupe only)

Re: number of 5 speeds

The input shaft spline is different for 6 vs 8 cyl t5s. The six cylinder trans had a 14 tooth input shaft and the 8s had 26 tooth spline. The 6 input shaft is also a small 1 inch diameter while the 8 has a 1 1/8 inch input diameter. Throw in the F*rd T5s and the 10 spline input shaft which is longer than the Chevy and it gets confusing in a hurry.

Re: number of 5 speeds

I am not sure about 1986... My guess would be the M39, or the equivalent for 1986...

I know the MX0 (for auto) was the same for the years I am aware of, but the MD8 is the THM700R4 or 4L60, so whether or not they changed the Basic M5 trans for the LG4 to L03 or not...
