10K mile '89 IROC-Z
This one has been posted here before, but has a lot more pics on eBay. Too bad it has the weakest possible power train.

Nice cruiser... talk about an entry level car when new - no rear defrost, crank windows, L03 / auto hardtop 15" wheels. But it does have the deluxe interior...
The radio is wrong, it has the "symphony sound" with silver buttons, came out of a similar year Cadillac. Steering wheel is pretty scuffed up on the bottom too, too bad.
I'm sure i'll get flamed for saying it but it's a great car to swap in a new style LT / LS motor and a stick! Should be rattle free, no paintwork needed, everything in the interior is still fresh, etc...

Re: 10K mile '89 IROC-Z
It's too bad that one of the few options selected for this car was the auto trans. The standard T5 and 3.08 gear would have made it lots more fun to drive than the extra cost 700R4 and 2.73.

Re: 10K mile '89 IROC-Z
A dealer has it so they think they are going to get 20 grand for it I'm sure. I wonder what happened that the steering wheel got so scraped up at the bottom. I agree its a great candidate for an LS T56 swap. That 170hp slug thats in it now doesn't make it much of a collector car. Not to mention it has almost no options.

Notwithstanding the options chosen on this particular car, looking at it and some others makes me want to reshuffle how I look at my 3rd gen hobby.
This car is nearly mint. It would only require a small effort to get near perfect. The steering wheel, the lower front spoiler, not much more. Moving forward, it's cars in this low mile condition I'll be looking at.

Re: 10K mile '89 IROC-Z
It's a beautiful car. The drivetrain would be easy enough to change but its a stock un-molested car. I drove a car similar to this before with no options - it's not what I wanted as a street car - but you could really feel the low weight of not having options in the performance of the car as you drove it. Just would need to swap in a higher power motor, put some 16'' IROC's on it, swap the gears to 3.42's and you would have a well rounded out performance car. Doesn't need body/paint work and the interior is very nice as well.

As far as being an LSx swap candidate, I see what you guys are saying, but.....
This car has been on eBay for about 1 day and has 8 days left, and the bid is already up to $7600. So, starting with a low miles creampuff for your LS swap sounds good, but you're probably going to need some fairly deep pockets.

Re: 10K mile '89 IROC-Z
If I didn't have 3rd gens coming out of the rafters, I'd definitely consider this car - even more seriously if it were a 5 speed.
But maybe I need to have more discipline and wait for one of my holy grail cars, a low miles, 5 speed, '88-'90, bright blue metallic, IROC-Z convertible.
BTW, thanks for posting those pics yaj!

Re: 10K mile '89 IROC-Z
Sure no problem. We'll still have the pics after they take the add down. I wish my interior looked that good, I'm in the process of going through it now.
I noticed the valve covers on that car are black. I thought only the late 1992 cars got black valve covers from the factory?

Re: 10K mile '89 IROC-Z
Condition, history and paperwork aside, this car is very undesirable. Small wheels, engine, auto trans, and drum brakes. I wouldn't feel bad leaving it as is and putting an LSx/T56 in with some 16" IROC wheels and 4 wheel discs. I'd only be interested in this car if the deal was really good or if I was the wealthy collector who just had to have one of each...
Normally the hardtop would be a plus for me, but since this car is just a cruiser, t-tops would be better.

Low options are a good thing when done right! My crank windows, radio delete, no rear defrost and the base interior add lightness!

Yes, patience is the key. Your holy grail will show up for sale, but you don't know when.
Just be damn sure you're ready when it does.

No, that stays.
My yellow '85 stays too. That car needs a few things to bring it up to the next level, but other projects have put it on the back burner the past couple of years. The others are probably going to be up for grabs, though.

Just going off the asking price, I think they'll be keeping it for a while.

Re: 10K mile '89 IROC-Z
remember it is ebay and alot of those bids are false .. people do it all the time to jack the price up .. its funny when you have two of the same cars on ebay and one has no bids and one has 30 bids ..

Ray you got a great car for 15K! Chazman if I had room i would try to pry that crossfire away from you. You would also have to be a couple thousand miles closer pal.

Thanks Mike. A few people have said the same thing to me. I probably put it up for sale at the wrong time, late summer/early fall is the best time to buy these cars, not sell them. Anyway, it's sitting in a heated garage under a car cover until next spring.

So the lo-hp motor and lack of options seem to have no effect on this car? Miles are king I guess?
