Re: California special Iroc-z

Here is a link to mine.

Something new that I found out about them is that the dash emblem on all these cars don't have the Tri-Red Z28 with IROC-Z beneath, what they came with was the same one as the Z28 LB9 equipped cars which was Tri-Red with Tuned Port Injection beneath. There is no IROC-Z on the dash emblem as all other IROC-Z have. I have checked with Dave Sauro about this to verify it on the black one pictured above. He bought his new and confirmed that his was the same as mine with no IROC-Z on the dash emblem.

Another item that isn't on these cars even though they all had the TPI engine is the tuned port injection logo on the left rear bumper as the Z-28 and IROC-Z TPI equipped cars had that year. These are just a couple more unique things that only the 1C5 "California" IROCZ has if your looking to verify if you have one.

They also came with the grid tail lights just as other Z28 cars had.

It appears that the side shot with a base tail light has been photo-shopped. Notice on that profile picture the jagged line of the tail light, where the other pictures are not that way.

Just saw one of these last night in the valley. It was black, exactly like the one in the pictures above. Still looked nice too. It was parked on the street, and I doubled back around the block to make it was what I thought it was... and it was. The area was too busy to try to find a place to park and look it over, thoigh.

The story I have is there was a group of people that worked on the VanNuys assembly line that were given an opportunity to create a special "California" model. They had to take from the parts bin and come up with a unique car.

If you look at it on the surface you might thing that it is plain Jane, however, it is unique. No other TPI car was made without the Spoiler. No other Z28 or IROC came without a blister hood. It still has the GFX, and you could argue that it looks like a B4C from 91-92, but in fact all other factory GFX cars had spoilers.

The car is unique for 3rd gens, actually I like the simplicity of "Less is more"... I imagine many of these (sadly) have been converted to the IROC/Z28 Hood and spoiler added.

Sounds like they mostly left things in the bin.

Re: California special Iroc-z

Personally I would think use the SC car, with the LB9, an IROC hood, and IROC 16" wheels, and spoiler. It would have given that old School SS look to it.

Great commercial!! I saw it a few years ago and thought it was a Cali IROC.

After looking at it frame by frame today it looks like it is an '87 on the windshield instead of '85 which is what it would have to be. The '79 Bird next to it looks like it has a similar "7" on the windshield like the Camaro's second number that is partially blocked by the guys tie looks like a "7" instead of a "5".

Although, it does have everything you would find and not find on a 1985 California IROC. The fog lights are missing too.

Front emblem is not there either which leads me to believe that the front end has been replaced with aftermarket parts and perhaps the fog lights were left off.

Also, it was a prop, many directors and such do not know nor care what year the car is as long as it is what they are looking for when doing a commercial or shooting film.

Re: California special Iroc-z

They more than likely removed the emblem for the shot, or made it appear not to be there. Many movies, TV shows and commercials remove emblems with cars to try to Mask what they are to not either insult or advertise for the manufacturer.

Re: California special Iroc-z

True. Usually you can tell though if they had made it disappear by blurring it.

Ford won't generally allow their logo to be used in almost any TV show, movie or commercial, that's why you see so many Crown Vics and Ford trucks with the emblems blurred.

Has anyone noticed that the photo-shopped picture of the black '85 "California Special" IROC-Z28 with the base tail lights, clear side marker light, is also missing the Z-28 logo on the rocker panel of the front fender?

My "regular" Iroc is the car I lusted after in HS, and I'll keep it with wheels, stripes, louvers and all. ....however....that being said.....I think the simplicity of of the Cali Irocs is gorgeous. I'm always casually looking for a really good deal on another Thirdgen to save, and assuming it's NOT a rare optioned car, It'll be a Cali clone for sure.

Hello 1985 1C5 California IROC owners, Can someone can take a picture, or two, or three of the emissions stickers from their 1C5 IROC, I would appreciate it, mine are long gone and I do not trust the Spark Plug Gap and Ignition Timing info I have found.

Hi, We are the original owners of a red 1C5 Unfortunately it's had a little body damage done to it and sat for 10 years in our shop. We took it out a couple of years ago and have been slowly putting some money into it. I do drive it now. Not sure when we'll be able to do the body work and paint job. We live in northern California and purchased it in our Hometown. The one car I'm so sorry we ever got rid of was our 70 1/2 AARCuda😔
