Question about my Trans Am

I just recently bought a 1984 Trans Am. It is black and gold and has the 15" gold wheels on it. I recently saw a post on a Facebook page with a pic of a car that was a Recaro Trans Am that looked just like mine. My car is missing the original seats so I was thinking it might be a Recaro Trans Am. The RPO sticker is also missing. How else can I tell what I have. Is there a website that will tell me what I have by using the VIN?

Re: Question about my Trans Am

84 should have a body data plate on the radiator support. That'd be a good place to look for codes.

Re: Question about my Trans Am

Y84 is the RPO code for the Recaro Special Edition Trans Am. But the data plate on the radiator support will not list all RPO codes and so it may not list Y84. Look for AQ9 - the Recaro seats.

The SPID sticker in the center console may not have ever been there as I believe that wasn't used until approximately 1985.

The other option is to order a factory invoice. Again, a factory invoice won't list all RPO codes.

I did not see AQ9 but grom the research I've done there has been a lot of debate as to whether that was the correct code or not

Re: Question about my Trans Am

This is from the Pontiac Parts book. AQ9 was used between the Lear Siegler and Recaro seats. Even though the data plate doesn't have all RPO codes, many examples I've seen do have that code on the Recaro S/E cars so if that's missing I'm less inclined to believe the car is a Recaro S/E.

As did my 82 Trans Am. It was falling off, so it's stored away, but it was there!

Re: Question about my Trans Am

I didn't think all early ThirdGens had the RPO sticker in the center console, which is why some need to use the plate.

In fact, Scott Moyer also made such comment:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/hist...ml#post5403778

I'm assuming the Firebird was the same as the Camaro in that regard.

Re: Question about my Trans Am

84 was the first year for the SPID. The data plate went away in 85 or 86. Seeing as how the data plate is riveted to the car, and usually covers the big options, that's the place I'd look.

Open your console lid and if you see a white sticker with a VIN # and bunch of codes, Match it to your VIN and if it matches, Then look for a Y84 code and if it's there CONGRATS you have a TRUE 1984 Recaro

If it's NO GO on SPID then

Look at your radiator support driver side is a small plate(credit card size) near driver headlight and it should have Y84 stamped on it

Posting pics or all the codes you see on here will help with your verification of a Recaro edition Trans am

Re: Question about my Trans Am

He noted not having the SPID sticker.

Is Y84 on the cowl tag if it's a Y84? The cowl tag does not list all RPO codes like the SPID. In fact, there was some discussion in the following thread that Y84 is not on all cowl tags for Recaros. That's why AQ9 (seats) is one thing to look for:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/hist...82-1983-a.html

This is similar to the 2nd Gens where a few special editions did not have the RPO code on the cowl tag but did on the build sheet.

Yes, Correct AQ9 is the RPO for Recaro Seats and should be on the build plate if it's a true Recaro car from the factory

Always have Y84 on my mind for some reason lol

Re: Question about my Trans Am

Also, for what its worth, Ive never seen an 84 Recaro with ground effects the same color as the stripes (gold). I believe all cars would have been equipped with W62, but in black. I also think all Recaros in 84 should be L69 (G) cars. If your 84 is indeed a W62 car and by some chance still has the original paint, the GFX should be black. Somebody please correct me if im wrong
