I really need as much help as possible!
I really need as much help as possible!
I have bought a 1989 Firebird XS model. The VIN is 1G2FS21SXKL261903.
If anyone would be willing to help me out with finding as much info on this car as I can it would be greatly appreciated.
little backstory on how I acquired this Firebird XS.
A guy on craigslist posted it for 600 dollars and I drove 2 hours to go take a look and yes, it is a roller. Although it came with the factory 2.8 v6 and borg warner 5 speed transmission. Most of the body is in ok shape aside from gaskets and a hood...gaskets due to the fact it has been sitting since 2003. I have looked for the SPID tag under the center console but with no luck. No trace of a build sheet or any sign of any RPO codes...if someone could point me in the direction i need to go to acquire more info on the options/ etc. It would make my day! Thank you in advance for anyone willing to help!

"XS" is not from the factory AFAIK. Not sure what that is, myself. Most likely aftermarket though; I'd suspect it's some dealer-applied appearance package. Seems like it comes up on here once in awhile, seems like mostly from California people. I don't really remember seeing it when I lived out there though. I can't recall anyone ever asking about one that it had a V8; all 6-cyls. Don't know if that's just a coincidence or what. The Google, which knows all, might tell you all you want to know.
What "options" are you wondering about? Most are pretty visible... AC, power windows, power seats, whatever radio it has, etc. It pretty much is what it is. Nothing special. You can get the paint codes off of the tag on the radiator core support. It's not the sort of car that would have "value" as derived from particularly sought-after options or anything like that, if that's where you're going with this.

Have you dug in the rear compartment for the spare tire, seeing if a build sheet is buried in there? Just might get lucky.

However, the invoice will not include every single option code that would have been on the SPID.
From the Pontiac Firebird 1967-2000 Photo History book by George W. Scala
"The front view of a 1989 Firebird with the Sport Appearance Package. Looking like a Trans Am or GTA, only the rims, hood, and rear spoiler gave it away. 15-inch wheels, the regular Firebird rear spoiler and the plain flat hood came on this bird. Firebirds in the Los Angeles area had "Firebird XS" emblems on the front fender. The San Francisco/Sacramento zone had "Firebird SSA" emblems. These dropped to just the "Firebird" emblem later in this year.
