Yup, I've had a few people tell me about the aluminum fenders. Steel ones don't weigh squat, less than 1/2 of not quite squat = highspeed, low drag.

Exactly. As Drew mentioned, some algorithm on the production line that triggered it for EPA purposes.

Re: Aluminum spare and driveshaft

You guys can have the plastic hood inserts, I just want an aluminum Formula hood! I'd imagine someone looked at the cast nature of the hood insert and just ***-U-ME'd it was plastic. Maybe I should take a really close look at the insert on my 91? Think my spare for the green car came off an 88 or 89, and the extra insert I've got laying around is definitely pot-metal or whatever.

I know where there's a 88 or maybe it was an 89? Iroc with a 5.7L TPI, T-tops, and aluminum shaft. Perfect front clip on it too. I tried to buy the entire car, but the junkyard guys said it belongs to the owner that wants to put the TPI engine in some antique POS. Stinks because it's got perfect fog lights, grill, bumper, hood, hood liner, etc. Think all four wheels were even good. Sure would love to part that car out and spread the wealth around a bit.

Re: Aluminum spare and driveshaft

Anybody have a pic of the canisters for the spare wheels. Not sure I have ever seen one. Need to check my 92 and see if it still has the aluminum spare and canister. I bought one of the "1LE spares" off ebay a while back that is the spoked design. I never knew they made stamped aluminum spares so this is a very helpful thread.

Very cool. Thank you. I checked my 92 and the aluminum spare is in the car. Didn't see the cannister, but I didn't pull everything out.

Re: Aluminum spare and driveshaft

Normally the canister is mounted to the inside of the spare with the bracket. In practice, when the can is used, it gets COLD. I've known more than one person that had to use the can, and nearly got frostbite from touching the steel part of the can. More than once I've heard people say they tossed the can in the weeds by the side of the road. While the can is supposed to be refilled and reused, historically it's seldom been done. The result is that the cans tend to part ways with the cars over time.

I've only found the can to still be in two of the thirdgens I've owned. Most of the time it's long gone.
