Unfortunately, your VIN cannot differentiate a Z28 from a Sporte Coupe because the 305 LG4 (eighth digit in VIN = H) was available in both. If it had been an engine that was unique to either (i.e. a V6 for Sport Coupe or Cross Fire/H.O. for Z28), the VIN would be conclusive.
In addition to RPO's, there two other ways to differentiate a Z28 from a Sport Coupe. Look for the VIN tag on the underside of the hood. If it matches, it is the original hood. Now then, it is a flat hood (Sport Coupe) or does it have twin simulated air inlets (Z28)? The second method is to look at the tire inflation recommendation decal on the driver's door. If it lists P215-65R15 tires, it is a Z28. The Sport coupe did not use this size.
