History / OriginalityGot a question about 1982-1992 Camaro or Firebird history? Have a question about original parts, options, RPO codes, when something was available, or how to document your car? Those questions, answers, and much more!
Ok, I know this car has 18k fewer miles than my car, but it's being advertised as well optioned and the bidding is already over $35k. I don't understand all the nay sayers that claim I want too much for my car when I have it listed at $34k. My car also has the 1st year for the L98 350, the 1st year for the Bose stereo system, the 1st year for leather seats, the last year for the preferred wheels and decal placement, etc. I also forgot that this car also doesn't have the custom interior. I would say this is strong pricing for a "not-fully-loaded" car.
Now, I don't remember if I've seen the under carriage of this car being detailed, and with it never being undercoated, it "might" be in better shape than mine that had undercoating and was removed, but I will challenge the statement that there are NONE this nice. I have seen many that are this nice and potentially cleaner!
I hope he gets his price.

The longer you keep it, the more it will be worth(at least for another 10-15 years). Your price will look like a bargain as the Third Gens continue to gain popularity.

Scott - why not list yours on ebay and see what happens ??
Leonard, we need to be careful about the timing of selling our cars, if we plan to sell. Certain cars, like yours, will always demand a premium from all generations, but regular cars from the 80s have a small window of opportunity. Yes, they are increasing today, but who will buy them in 10-15 years? The price of 80s and 90s imports are skyrocketing, while the American cars are only increasing. I've seen the 90s turbo cars hitting well into the $30k-$40k range, while our cars are still mostly in the upper teens to mid $20k range. The next generation doesn't have the same interest in cars we do/did. I know many younger people today that don't care about having a license. Uber/Lyft have taken off, Turo is being used heavily, etc.
I might list mine in the spring. While most of the country is still cold, I think many potential buyers will wait for spring due to needing to get the car home and then find a parking space. I haven't fully committed to selling, unless the price is right.
Scott, I agree that there is a timing issue for selling these cars. If a guy was 15 in 1990, then he would be 45 now. Most guys seem to have more disposable income between 45-65, so I think you still have some time for the Third Gen popularity to continue.

It seems people will always pay a premium for an ultralow mileage (< 5000 mile) car, but I'm not sure how large a premium really makes sense (compared to a car with 20-30K miles).
Scott, you bought your car with 6,000 miles, and now it has about 20,000 miles. I know you have taken great care of it, but have you noticed any degradation? Does the car still feel as "tight"? Did you consider subframe connectors, or is that not necessary on a car with 20,000 miles?
If a 20,000 mile car is still cosmetically beautiful, mechanically perfect, and tight (no extra squeaks or rattles), it should still be worth good money, in my opinion.
I'm probably biased, though. Right now, my 1987 IROC has just over 6000 miles, and it will probably have about 20,000 miles on it in about 10 years :-)
My car is just as tight as it's always been. I have no rattles at this time.
Now, I have had issues with the speedometer having a whirring sound, but that was resolved with lubricating the speedo cable. I have also had issues with the AC, but that was fixed. My sway bar end links completely deteriorated, but again, easy fix. The headliner fell apart due to Florida's ozone content, but I had it recovered.
You will have degradation due to age, not use. The lack of use is worse for the car than driving it. It's difficult to keep a car factory new when driving it and the same is true when they sit. As long as they are properly maintained, both options are similar.
Any time I hear a rattle, I locate it and fix it. When I received my father's '82 Pace Car, it had interior rattles all over the place. I've removed almost all of them now and the car rides like new. I only need to fix the squeaky driver's seat and this car will be as quiet as a new car. Remember, most interior rattles and squeaks are due to screws being too tight, or too loose. Also, the foam inside the door panels that eliminate rattles are usually completely gone, so fixing the doors will considerably quiet these cars.
Im seriously thinking of putting my 23K mile 87 IROC on the market fairly soon.......Seems the market is pretty good. I may try putting it on Bring A Trailer and see what kind of interest I get.
thanks for the detailed response. It's good to hear that the car can be just as tight with 20,000 miles (as long as one fixes things as they come up). I was thinking that maybe I would have to add subframe connectors to keep the car "tight as new", but I didn't really want to do that as my car is a low-mileage original.
It sounds like I won't need the subframe connectors. (My goal is to keep it "like new" -- not "better than new").
I worry about the super low mileage ones and I have seen enough evidence of the care and maintenance Scott has put into the car.
I’d prefer a driveable showcar to a museum car with flat spots on its original tires. I believe the car should run and drive and be useable and reliable to be considered “mint”
I will say the underside on this yellow car looks excellent and the condition of that interior is more mint than most low mile 87s. That interior usually didn’t hold up as good as the 85-86 or the 88-90. Especially the door panels. The car looks tip top, no doubt.
I think $45k is high for that car and I think $34k for Scott’s car is a fairly good deal.
I prefer the Dark Red Metallic personally and find it to be more iconic and have more presence, but I do know people that seek out yellow IROCs. If someone really wants that color, it’s probably tough to find in that shape...
As far as prices on these cars, I don’t think we’re at the top quite yet. I find people in their 20s that are interested in IROCs. Very interested. I don’t think we’ll hit the peak of prices for another 15-20 years before they flatten out. They will only be more rare in showcar condition and bone stock. At some point I think even the swapped and modded showcars will be worth good money.

Yeah, it’s amazing how taking the door panels apart, taping down, tightening and using foam quiets down the cars considerably. I’ve always found most of the rattles to be in the doors. I have to take my passenger door apart to fix a little squeak I hear.. I’ve had the same noise on every Thirdgen I’ve owned. My 90k Z28, My 26k IROC and my 30k mile Vert. Easy fixes if you have the time!

im sure the right person is going to pay you top dollar for your car someday , its beautiful .. now as far as the this yellow one on ebay goes , who knows if those bids are legit .. reserve not met probably means he and his boys are bidding it up , its free to do so why not .. happens all the time .. should still bring killer money though ..
My 1990 IROC-Z has literally zero squeaks or rattles at 44k miles. Everything is SUPER tight.
That's good to hear too, but your car is a hardtop, right? They have the strongest body structure, so that likely helps.
Scott's car is the perfect comparison point for me, as I also have a 1987 IROC with T-tops.
The way people always complain about the weak body structure made me think I better add subframe connectors to avoid a loose piece of junk by 20,000 miles!
This discussion has led me to believe that is not true.
Another T-top 87 reporting in... 61K miles, was a REAL flexi-flyer until I noticed a previous owner removed the triangle shaped brace opposite the steering box on the driver's frame rail. That actually made a significant difference you can feel from inside the car. Rebuilding the doors was HUGE too. I've got a set of SFCs set aside for the car, but haven't really gotten there yet. I've got to strip away the previous owners undercoating mess before I can weld them in, ain't nobody got time for that. My hardtop 91 Formula is a competely different animal though. At 120k miles its like new compared to the 87. FWIW.
Well, the car on Ebay was bid up to $36,300 but didn't meet reserve. I wonder what the seller wanted.
Has anyone seen a regular (non-1LE) IROC sell for $40K?
Scott mentioned above that this car wasn't fully loaded, but it appears pretty loaded to me. I think it has the custom cloth interior. I suspect that it has option level 3 (it even has the automatic dimming rearview mirror). The only options I can see missing are the Bose stereo (it has the UX1 with the EQ), leather seats, and the deluxe luggage compartment trim (B48). My option level 3 IROC is missing those too, but I consider my car pretty loaded!
I doubt that affected the value too much.

a 5000 mile non 1le z28 just brought 40k at barrett jackson but that was a heritage z28 .. a iroc bringing 40k is gonna be hard to do but if it was the right car you never know .. as far as this yellow one on ebay getting bid up to 36,300 those bids were probably his buddies jacking the price up .. i bet his reserve was 36,500
It blows me away that people pay considerably more for options that had very little cost when new. I'm thinking of the older pickups with the Z71 option package. It was only a few hundred dollars, but resale was thousands more than a non-Z71 4x4. The Heritage Package was a $198 option that was mostly just the stripes. All 1992 Camaros were 25th Anniversary cars and that little badge on the hatch was basically the only thing that separated it from any other car with decals.
Was there anything special about the blue IROC selling for $55K+ (besides the ultralow mileage)?
It has a headlight treatment, but if anything, I would have thought that might lower the value (not original).
Price seems crazy high.

I wonder why the exhaust tips are incorrect for a 116 mile car. Very clean car, but I wonder if the original owners were planning to do something, but I can't imagine what as everything else looks correct.
