I just bought a 1992, 5 speed GTA....
So there were only 29 built, and can't see where the numbers can be broke down any farther for color, interior, etc. There was also only 1 car built with the J41 iron drum brake rear end, and 1 car built with the N65 steel spare. This is also that car. I'm assuming the N65 spare goes hand in hand with the iron drum rear end?
She's a project....and it's been sitting in a garage since at least 2009. It has all the right codes. Y84, WS6, MM5, N10, LB9, CC1, GU6, G80, KC4, etc. It has 71k miles, and is black with tan leather interior. I posted it here instead of the Members Firebirds section, due to the rarity of the car. The engine block was cracked, and removed, but everything else is there for the car other than the block and the flywheel. The TPI setup, heads, all engine components, etc are all included. The rear spoiler is cracked, but it's also included

At least it was garaged. Should be pretty fixable. Different story when things get left outside in the elements for 10+ years...

Nice score. Get the stuff off the seats so the foam doesn't take a memory of the weight

Darin, you do know that's a 1991 based on your VIN, right? 10th digit is M so that's 1991.
Since you looked up 1992 figures along with stating 1992 in your post, I'm assuming you may not have known! Sorry to give you the bad news that it's not quite as rare

I'm glad you caught that! It was advertised as a 1992. I was going to pick the car up the first part of next week...but I may just back out of it.
On the other hand.....the price is definitely right. I might just stay in the deal and put it in a shed at my brother's farm

It's your call and while the car is not as rare as it would have been if it were a 1992, it's still a car with low production figures. Not to mention it's a car that you have the skills to rebuild and keep it on the road. Otherwise, it could end up scrapped or parted. Don't want you to think it's no good, just based on a year and production figure difference.

91 production numbers are also very low.........comparatively speaking.

I'm super glad to find that out now, rather than find out after I arrived after a 2 hour drive with a trailer and then see the title, lol! And THAT is why this website is so awesome!!

Yeah so the car is actually 1 of 164 GTA's with the 5 speed, and 62 with the iron drum rear end. Still a rare bird...just not nearly as rare as the 1992 figures

Compnine shows it's 1 of 58 in their database as having the Y84/LB9/MM5/CC1/GU6/41U combo. Of course, those figures come with the standard footnote that they can't be guaranteed.
I don't know if the J41 would really be something to be considered of value over the J65, but if you add the J41 into the figures it drops from 58 to 11.

Must of been built during the rear disc shortage. I had a 91 T/A loaded but had the J41 drums, i much prefer disc brakes.

Re: I just bought a 1992, 5 speed GTA....
Yes. Picked it up a few weeks ago. 1981 X-11, 4 speed, the one to have. Has the HO motor designed by John Heinricy for SCCA racing. Bigger cam, bigger valves, higher compression, freer flowing exhaust, large air cleaner, with functional cowl induction, (based off the '69 Z/28 hood design), re-geared transaxle, engine cradle stiffening, etc., etc. Dominated it's SCCA class until it was re-classed. Beat Mustang GT until 1983.
Got it from the original owner, 37K miles, and has been sitting in a storage building for years.
Original, 40 year old Eagle GTs.
That rubber ducting on the cowl induction is literally unobtanium.
Sorry Darin, don't want to hijack your thread.

They were fun little cars. I had they same one in silver. Bought it new for $7k. They have a bad rep but mine never gave me any issues.

Yeah, in ‘82 GM started to water the package down. Smaller cam for emissions, common exhaust shared with all the other X-cars. By ‘85, it lost the HO motor and got the low RPM MPFI 2.8 with auto only. Then it was gone.
The guys who ran them in SCCA say they’d shift at 7,000 RPM. The MPFI engine had lots of low end torque but was done at 4,500.

Re: I just bought a 1992, 5 speed GTA....
I think I told you guys the story of how that car was free? If I haven't ,the story is good enough to tell again.
I bought this car used from a local Chevy dealer. I was broke as a joke and needed a car to go to school with - like right NOW. I went to the dealer with my dad and picked this Citation out because it only had 9K miles and was the only stick on the used car lot. We paid $5K, and my dad presented a cashier's check. Right after that, we had an altercation with the dealer, because they were dicks and honestly I rushed buying this car because I was desperate.
So...........20 years later, my sister sees my dad's name on one of those unclaimed funds list. In all the confusion, those idiots forgot to to cash the $5,000 check. Serves them right!

Re: I just bought a 1992, 5 speed GTA....
I had an '80 Club Coupe. Complete strippo, bench seat, poverty caps, no options other than a V6 and 4 speed. It was an early build, (1979) car and had lots of problems. Would break or be recalled often. But it was the lightest body with the ballsiest powertrain that year. I had a new exhaust, (sans cat) bent up for it, recurved the distributor and bumped the timing and it would chirp third - until something broke, usually the front dog bone motor mount, on a 1-2 shift.
I think I told you guys the story of how that car was free? If I haven't ,the story is good enough to tell again.

Well, I backed out of the deal. The owner was waiting to get the title, so I was able to get out of it. Had it been a 1992, I would have definitely been all in.

He said they've had the car since 2009, and he wanted to get the title switched from his late father's name to his name. He said he had to send it in to the courthouse due to the whole covid thing. I don't really think that part of it will be an issue.
If anyone would like his phone number, PM me and ill give his info. The car was a whopping $600. But it has a prior salvage title from 1993. If it would have been a super rare 92, I would have resurrected it. But to me, it's a parts car, or a low budget hot rod for someone. It's located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa
The hood and taillights are worth the asking price...

IF someone wants it to part it out, I'd be a buyer on the leather wrapped steering wheel, and the driver's side cup holder if it's intact
