Look what followed me home. ‘87 Formula

46,000 miles. From the original owner. Floorpans are amazing. LG4, 5 speed, 3.23 gears. Needs much TLC. Figured I'd start a thread. Just washed it in Dawn dish soap.

Very nice, the 5 speed really makes it cool and looks pretty original. I look forward to seeing more of it.

First things to do:

1) New tires

2) Fix passenger side headlight

3) repair or replace leaking factory exhaust.

What tires are you going to go with? I need new tires myself.

I just recently finished doing the headlight fix on one of my ThirdGens. My RH didn't work while the LH did but I did both at the same time. The LH is the one that you have to take the motor apart, and fight with the brushes to put back together. Not a big deal but it's those little things that can fight.

I'm not sure. A few years ago I put the General G-Max on my yellow car. I think they are a great summer tire, but it appears that they've gone up 50% since then. I'll probably go with one of the all seasons

I think so. It is referenced as "body color" in the 1987 material. But perhaps @okfoz can confirm.

I think it's a little easier to change heater core on a Firebird vs Camaro? Better access? Any feedback?

I've always liked the Formulas. 'Only thing I would change is the rear spoiler. I like the '82-'84 Trans Am (and later base Firebird) spoiler better...

Can confirm a similar situation; 3 years ago, 4 BFGs for my wife's Honda CRV were $640 mounted/balanced. Those same 4 tires today cost over $1000 locally.

5) Pull out heater core. See if it is a brass OEM and determine if it can be repaired.

Re: Look what followed me home. ‘87 Formula

Are the signs present that tell you the heater core needs to be replaced? With the low mileage you've mentioned, it's most likely the factory heater core. If you can get a new OE-type core from somewhere (they are available, as I mentioned in your "Hawk's" thread, and a local radiator shop can probably get one), then anyone who is proficient at soldering should be able to remove the side tanks from the old core and put them on the new core.

BTW, I contacted Hawk's about OE heater cores. I can still hear the crickets from 2500 miles away. If you haven't yet, as I mentioned in your other thread, and you need one, then this would be the perfect time for you to do your thing with Bruce.

If you have to remove the heater core, then the only difficult bolt to reach is the one on top (even more difficult to put back). I've read that it's easier to reach that top bolt in a Firebird than a Camaro, but I've never done a Camaro. But if you've removed/replaced a heater core in a 3rdgen before, then it will be easy. If this will be your first, then it might take about 2-3x longer than it should.

The failed heater announced itself with a puddle of coolant on the passenger floor while I had the car idling yesterday. I am told the top bolt is easier on a Firebird than a Camaro. On a Camaro it's a biotch!!! Regarding Hawk's,, haven't heard a peep since I posted.

Remove the under-dash panel and the front lower trim piece, and you'll see the cruise control module and the subwoofer module (if so equipped) filling a gap in the dash structure. Pull down, unplug and remove the cruise module, and you should be able see through the gap to that top bolt. Then with a long extension on your socket, or whatever tool you typically use in such a situation, and maybe a swivel on the extension, you should be able go through that gap in the dash straight back to the bolt, although the bolt is a little bit lower than a perfectly straight shot, hence the possible need of a swivel.

I'm trying to post a video of the undercarriage, but the battery tray is shot. Any alternatives to welding in a new one?

Charlie, I think your Facebook posts don't appear because your group is not public? Your video link, directly, is not available as Facebook shows an error message that the video is no longer available.

I tried posting it from my phone here and it said that it exceeded capacity. Any ideas, JT?

To be honest, it's hard to beat YouTube in video hosting as it requires different servers and resources that sites like ours don't offer with normal webservers.

We have about a 20mb upload limit and I'm guessing your video exceeds that.

Your Facebook links should work, but I think it's because your Facebook settings are restricting them from being shared outside of your group.

Yes, I turned it into a private page last year.
