Re: Build plate?
I can't speak for Chevy Camaros but Pontiac Firebirds had the build tag on the core support until 1985 and 1986+ didn't have the build tag. IDK if there is a difference between Norwood, OH built cars and Van Nuys, CA built cars.

Not being a know it all, or being nit picky here, but I believe Shifty is mistaken. Scott Moyer is the ultimate authority on thirdgen history, and when he says the trim plate was eliminated at a certain point in time, it's pretty much a done deal. Both my 1989 Firebird, and 1987 Trans Am, didn't have them, and I am sure neither were eliminated after they were built (have had experience with the original owners of both cars since they were brand new)
The trim tag over the radiator was replaced by a different style tag (that referenced the build sheet number), and that newer tag was relocated to the frame above the passenger side headlight, but was eventually relocated back to the original location above the radiator.
The change occurred in 86, but not all 86 and 87 cars got the new tag, with many having no tag at all, for some reason. The new tag was eventually relocated back above the radiator. Not sure when, but 92s have it there again.

I stand corrected. I didn't even think about firebird's. As for the Camaros I thought they all had the same plate due to the deliberate stamped recess in the sheet metal.
Found this picture online. I think I clicked it many years ago and posted it somewhere here on TGO for this same topic. The tag that began being used in 1986 is like the black one at the bottom of the three tags in the picture, but not all 86 and 87 cars got them, for unknown reasons. And it was placed on the top of the support in the area of the passenger side headlight, not in the original location over the fan, and that original location over the fan was left blank. But at some point, this new tag was relocated back to the original location over the fan. More searching showed that 1991 and 1992 got this tag back in the original location, but if it happened prior to 1991, then people will have to look at their own cars to see if they have the tag at all, and if the tag is near the passenger side headlight or back over the fan. The number sequence on the tag, XX XXXX, is a direct reference to the car's build sheet, matching numbers in boxes 1 and 10 on the top left corner of the sheet.
Edit: And here's a picture showing where GM initially put the new tag for 1986+, before moving it back in the later years. There are a gazillion images of 3rdgen engine bays online, but very few have the core support in the frame of the picture. I've circled the tag.

also the smaller tag with 6 numbers is supposably a code for the sequence number of the carpet and this was only used at the Van Nuys plant starting in 1986. this number also is on the build sheet..

Lots of images that have the core support in the frame can be found on Bring a Trailer auctions for 3rd gen Camaros and Firebirds. I looked at a bunch of them for the Firebirds to refresh my memory before I replied to this thread.
Here are 2 car I down loaded pic from Bring a Trailer .com in case you want to look closer. Both are 1985. Red is a Norwood built car yellow Van Nuys built car.
