History / OriginalityGot a question about 1982-1992 Camaro or Firebird history? Have a question about original parts, options, RPO codes, when something was available, or how to document your car? Those questions, answers, and much more!
Hey all. New here, I’ve done a lot of browsing while working on my third gen, but this is my first time posting.
I’ve run into a strange situation. I recently purchased my Camaro (registered/titled as an ‘86 IROC Z 305 TPI) from my late grandfather who was a massive car collector. I would have thought he would have checked the VIN.
After using Classic Industries’ VIN decoder tool, I have reason to believe that either my car is registered as the wrong year, honestly the whole VIN doesn’t match up to a sequence on the decoder.
My VIN is 1G1FP87FOGN153336.
1G1FP would indicate a model year of 1987 if I’m understanding the decoder correctly. This is where it begins to get weird. My 6th digit is 8. Which doesn’t correspond to anything on the decoder for what the 6th digit should be in relation to the first 5. Can anybody help me figure this out? Would be greatly appreciated.
the car has TPI, rear disc brakes, automatic transmission, t tops - the tops would mean that the 6th digit should be “3” given that the car is vin-Ned as an ‘87. I don’t know. Any help would be great. Thank you! Dashboard vin

Re: VIN Decoding Trouble
1986 F-Body cars have a one year only, externally mounted CHMSL (Center High Mounted Stop Lamp).
Post a clear in focus picture of your car's SPID (Service Parts IDentification) label that is located in the center console of your car. This label contains the RPO (Regular Production Option) codes for your car.
People here can help you decode your car's SPID label. I'm a Firebird guy not a Camaro guy. I can rattle off Firebird RPO codes like I can rattle off my SS number. Me doing Camaro RPO codes is like pulling teeth. I can do it if I have to but I don't really want to.
